Hunting Ear Pro Recommendations

I tried the Axel x core pro they 100% sucked.
What a bunch of gimmicky media hype bullshit.


I did a lot of research and then tried the Sound Gear Shield.
They are super legit, clear audio, no wind noise or humming. And you can tell the direction of sound.

I saw one other mention of them but short of custom I’d say the Otto noizebarriers as well. They are a bit pricy but I’ve had mine for about 2 years and no complaints. Zero obstruction when using a rifle and perform great while having a conversation on a line with 6 or more pistols going at once. Good battery life not to mention the case is its own charging station that will get you through in the field. Two caveats I would mention is they are NOT for indoor shooting as the processor can’t handle it. I would also upgrade the ear tips to the comply P-series.

shotguns need less protection as they are quieter, 150-155 db. Rifles run 160-170 range. Foam plugs run 15-30 depending on the fit and user skill. Custom plugs run 25-27, yes foam tests better than customs. I worked for a lab and we tested our stuff. Muffs run 15-25 with glasses. The slit leak from the glasses reduce the effectiveness of muffs. Also muffs can be lifted off the head in larger blasts. Double protection is 45-50, limited by bone conduction.

With all that said, single protectors, plugs or muffs may get you below 140 which is what is needed for a single shot. For 100 shots you need to be under 130. That takes double protection for a rifle, a single protector will do it for a shotgun, but only if worn correctly.
For 1000 shots, maybe a rso or score keeper, you need to be under 120. Even double protection is marginal for a rifle. Shotgun, no problem.

I had an audiologist in my area take molds and make custom fit silicone plugs. It was only $100, paid with my HSA, and they are excellent.

I've seen booths making them at gun shows before.

I’ve been using E.A.R. inc custom molded electronic ear plugs for the last 20 years for shooting clays and some hunting. I always had trouble with wind noise and the sound of walking over gravel while hunting so I rarely wore them for that but they’ve worked great for clays.

A few years ago my original pair was ruined when I left the batteries in for too many months and both hearing aid batteries leaked. E.A.R. recently replaced the nearly 20 year old ruined set with a heavily discounted pair of the newer MM2 model which has a switch to reduce unwanted ambient noise like wind and walking over gravel. These work really well and I’ll probably start using them for bowhunting elk since I can’t hear bugles as well as younger guys. I can also tell direction of sound. My only complaint during the chukar hunts I’ve used them on so far is when sweating a bunch, like when hiking uphill for a long period of time chasing chukar, I get sweat inside the units which really bothers me.(I have the same issue with the ear buds I wear at the gym but those are easy to remove and quickly dry in that environment.) My solution, which I haven’t tried but will tomorrow, is waiting to put them in until the first pull up the mountain in the morning is done, I cool down and I’m hiking side hills and less strenuous terrain. I normally don’t get into birds on that first climb so I’m hoping this works out.
