I’m looking to build out a camera/lens setup primarily for waterfowl hunting, but also general outdoor use (wildlife, scouting trips, etc.). I’m not a pro photographer—more focused on reliability and usability in harsh conditions than chasing perfect image quality.
My main concerns:
From what I’ve read, weather sealing and rugged construction seem critical, especially for this type of use.
I’m open to mirrorless or DSLR, and not tied to any brand.
A few specific questions:
Not looking to overcomplicate it—just want something rugged, dependable, and capable of getting solid shots in real hunting conditions.
Appreciate any firsthand experience or setups you’ve found that work.
My main concerns:
- Cold weather battery performance (late season hunts)
- Durability in wet/saltwater environments (boats, blinds, spray, mud)
- Something that’s not overly complicated to run with gloves on

A few specific questions:
- What systems have held up well for you in wet/cold hunting conditions?
- Any issues with battery life dropping off hard in the cold?
- Lens recommendations for waterfowl?
- Any tips for protecting gear from saltwater corrosion over time?
