Hunting Dog Under 25lbs

I saw a Jack Russell chase a wounded wildebeest up a mountain in SA. . It set up a racket when it got the animal stopped. After the wildebeest was shot the dog ran up and bit it in the ass and then turned around and walked off. They are used extensively in Africa for hunting. Picture is our own full coat.

I’ve got a mini goldendoodle who’s 17 lbs, he’s smart as a whip, very trainable and has quite a sniffer and set of ears on him, his eyes are something else as well.

We hiked Little Devils Tower trial in South Dakota last summer, the last 1/4 mile or so is essentially bouldering to get to the top and he did it with no help. I also have yet to find his quit button, anything we do with him, he always looks at us with a “what’s next?” look.

I’ve always said, I’d love to hunt him but I don’t have the drive to at the moment. With the popularity of blood tracking, I’ve thought about training him for that.

Regardless, based on what you described for what your looking for in a dog, mine (a mini goldendoodle) checks every one of your boxes.
What’s a mini goldendoodle? Mini poodle x golden retriever?

So not really a hunting dog, just a dog to go on your hunts?

I'd just pick a dog that I thought was cool.

Nothing that size is gonna do anything to a black bear. Which aren't a problem anyway.
Yep. Heads up on bears/varmints, secondary would be trailing. Flyable, can deal with harsh terrain, smart.

Dang that’s the smallest wildebeest I’ve ever seen (jk). Great photo.

I have a buddy that has some fox terrier Mcnab crosses that I think are right around the 25 pound mark. They’re great dogs he brings them to work, works cows and takes them hunting both as a second set of eyes/ear& nose as well as blood trailing. Obedience, brains and legs of a mcnab with a little more of a gritty prey drive of the terrier. scruffy looking buggers though. Also finding one would be tough

My buddy has a mini goldendoodle mom and a tiny poodle dad…but it’s a poodle and golden retriever mix, which is the best of both worlds for smarts and hunting.

People a lot smarter than me were able to modify the genes some how to make them smaller.

The only thing I don’t care for, is we have him groomed about every 8 weeks so he doesn’t get shaggy and hot.

Jack Russell Terrier, my brother had a great one years back and we hunted valley and gambles quail with him. He also fought off a coyote and made a fighting retreat. Great hunters but they don't get along with other dogs and live only for their male master.

No it’s people taking dogs and making genetic nightmares. Then charging people a lot of money who don’t know any better.

That’s fine, you can have that opinion, OP was asking for a dog that a mini goldendoodle fits for so I was giving my opinion on an option for him.

You’ve obviously got a strong opinion about it and you’re entitled to it but I’m not getting into a pissing match about it.

Ya I do. I know of four 4 in the little town i live in all on allergy medicine one has hip dysplasia another is arthritic at 8 years old. Hate seeing people get dogs that are prone to health issues . Doodle breeders don’t do any health tests they should and use dogs that don’t better the breed on any way.

Cocker Spaniel. This is the answer.
My Springer is only 35lbs, but we train with folks with field-bred cockers and those dogs are lightning bolts! They will tear up any upland field you throw them at. They'll retrieve geese.
(The good ones are also absolute psychos, but hey, worth it.)

How genetics work isn't an opinion, it's science.

If fancy mutts are the best of both worlds, why aren't they taking the hunting and trial world by storm?

I have a small terrier mix that has that Jack Russell trait when it comes to “fight or flight.” He did not get the memo about the “flight” part of the equation. He doesn’t look for trouble and he’s friendly with everybody, but he’s all in if it comes. (Reminds me of my older brother). If something alarms him he attacks, and he’s not kidding. If a dire wolf showed him his teeth he’d go for it. I worry that he’s gonna go after a pit bull or Malinois some day and get killed or badly hurt. So you gotta watch that.

He’s very smart, trainable, and obedient though, and I think would make an excellent hunting dog if I wanted to. If I was doing this I’d look at a Jack Russel or a mix.
