I've met a pile of folks from a state based hunting forum back in forum haydays before social media platforms took off. Have went hunting/fishing with several and developed multiple lifelong friendships. Unfortunately a that forum is pretty much dead now as everyone has shifted to Facebook Groups and other social media.
I haven't hunted with some of them but have shared info and even gear with some. Takes a bit of trust to get a pin and hike in there and have it be "good". Some guys could send ya to hell and be laughing at ya as they send you in. It also takes trust to share your pins, with hopes that they don't take the entire army of their friends in there next year. One guy sent me a tarp to try. I have sent gear as a thank you. To me this is as close to "hunting" together as I have come.
I believe that it can take quite a bit of personal interaction to actually know very much about someone else and even then people can totally change in a fairly short period of time.
It's one thing to agree to hunt with someone for a day or 3,,,,and certainly something quite different to go on a 2 or 3 week adventure with a guy you don't really know.
So a couple years ago I was talking with a guy on an archery forum, he wanted to try archery elk in Colorado. I had him going to another unit near me. That was the year we had fires going everywhere it seemed.
He was a few days out and a fire started in his unit. I contacted him, told him just come to my camp. Laid out a few rules he was fine with. He had driven almost 1000 miles, found my camp , and had a bunch of firewood cut and his shelter up when I came back to camp.
Turned out to be a fine hunting partner, and a damn lucky one. On his last day, he was pretty beat since we hit it hard every day. I had to run home for a night for some wife maintenance. Told him to try a spot near camp before he gave up. He did, and killed this 500 yards from camp. First elk, Solo.
I've become friends with a guy on here, by asking to look as his pull outside in hopes to recreate them. He's known as Rokslide Ben in my house. We do training hikes on a regular basis, hunted 2 times but have more we're planning for the next year.
I have met and hunted with several people from my old vasportsmen.com forum. Done a few hunts in Virginia as well as Georgia, and Montana last year with a buddy.
A ton. During the 1990's and early 2000's, anothe site I frequent planned a group hog hunt in TN. A local buddy of mine and I went for 6-7 running and met some great guys. AZ lions, AZ javelina, Alberta bear, FL gators/hogs, AK deer, BC moose. We've done a lot.
