Ok, I’ll take the bait. How is it misleading and potentially wrong?

Just because they don’t know what killed him. I read another article that said as much, and that they won’t do an autopsy. It’s sensationalism journalism IMO. Gets the clicks. I’ll admit tho had the guy gone fishing that day he’d probably still be alive.

Sad deal, but it happens and I can relate....

I got attacked by a large buck in 2009. It was near dark on a deserted mountain pass and my wife and I hit a deer with my Toyota truck. I went out to inspect my vehicle and walk back the 100 yards to see if the animal was okay or not.
Before I knew what was going on, a huge buck jumped up and hit me full tilt. He was on top of me and going to work trying to gore me as I struggled to press him off. We were literally tangled in old barbed wire in the ditch. At 6'5'' 225 I'm a big man, but I was panicking and wondering if the damn thing was going to kill me right there! i was freezing as well, I had no coat on and it was 20* with a 30 mph wind.
I stumbled to my knees and had his 6X6 rack in my hands and we went at it. 'Obsessed' is an understatement, this deer was crazy. I wanted to get to the truck to hole up, but I was afraid to turn my back on him, he kept coming.
I tired to break his neck, but I was dreaming to think I could. No chance. All I did was seriously piss him off. Finally my terrified wife ran back to us and threw me a tire iron, which I grabbed and hit him between the horns. Didn't faze him. I was getting pretty torn up at this point.
After 40 minutes of chaos in a sideways blizzard the fight turned in my favor when my wife found and tossed me a leatherman juice with a 2" blade.
It was ugly, but I got the upper hand with a throat cut.
I called the local sheriff and then F&G and explained what happened in case they wanted to come out. I was granted permission to tag and take the buck. My truck was towed.
It took me a couple of days to recover from the all-over soreness from that encounter.

Here's all that remains.....and yes, the skull is synthetic, the tire iron cracked his.

Wow. What an experience. Glad you’re okay.

40 minutes? Seems like a very long time for this to happen.

Doubly sad is a link on the same page to a GA hunter being killed by a buddy. Something to the effect of thick brush. Grew up in the South and that happened way too much.

Know your target and what lies beyond it.

That means don't shoot at movement or anything not clearly a legal animal for your license/tag.

Wear hunter orange (unknown on deceased)

It felt like three hours. It just goes to show the stamina of these animals. A rutting buck might cover 15 miles+ in a 24 hour day. Incredible strength.
One of the most intense nights of my life, and for my wife too.

My wife read my posting here about our encounter together and said 'those guys have no idea how to process that'....I suspect she was right.
Our neighbor, he's about 54 or so, was attacked by a large buck right on our property about ten years before we purchased this acreage. He seldom talks about the experience, he was waylayed early one morning in the dark down by the pond. I suspect he was wearing or dragging some sort of estrous scent. He walked away relatively unscathed but badly shaken.

My brother in law and I follow these rules:

Wait a few minutes before you begin your approach.

Approach a downed deer slowly with loaded firearm trained on it.

Check for breathing and eyes closed or open from a distance.

Give your thanks, take pictures, and begin gutting it.

That is one of the craziest stories I've ever heard. I can't even imagine what that must have been like. Glad you and your wife are okay!

Friend of mine was stalked by a mountain lion for over an hour. He was working in the woods timber cruising, and did not have a firearm. This was before the advent of bear spray too. He had to fend the screaming lion off with sticks and rocks multiple times while continuously backing away. He thought he was going to die for sure. It's intense to hear him tell it. He just gets this weird look like he thinks nobody can really understand what he went through, kind of like your wife said about us being unable to process your story.
