It was a bit of a zoo. More people outside then inside (good to see the numbers). Attendants would have been better represented if there was some type of order/civility to the screaming....but good to see people standing up and speaking out against Chaffetz.

I can't speak to other states, but in Montana this would be a severe weakening of enforcement on public lands. My 25 years of enforcement experience was entirely with small counties (large in size, low in population). We had a few departments that we got along great with (well enough we were cross deputized), but a few that we had very poor relations with. If you think these departments would adequately provide enforcement on public lands, I can tell you with certainty, they would not.

Having an elected official in a small rural county in charge of enforcement for large tracts of public lands is not a recipe that would play out well in many areas.

Contract work or grant reimbursement has its place as a supplement to federal officers in terms of creating a law enforcement presence. However, it would IMO never be an acceptable substitute.

Particularly when one looks at southern Utah, or anywhere else that has a contentious travel plan/RMP in place, it's not hard to see wherever there could be issues with enforcement,

This is all such a disingenuous and an incredibly transparent means to an end. Two years after block grants are passed they will be proposing bills to address the underfunded law enforcement block grants tied to federal mandates. I.e. Just more excuses for state transfers and eventual privatization.

I think he underestimated the turnout just a little haha. I'm actually optimistic even utahans are finally seeing the end goal of these and similar bills and taking a stand

US Sen Cory Gardner, R CO is not clearing full phone mail and avoiding constituent demands for him to schedule CO town hall meetings on weekends, b/c he knows he will end up like Chaffetz. He has stated lukewarm opposition to public land transfer, but constituents here are on the local TV news saying he is hiding from them RE health care and other social issues.
