How’s the Idaho elk action??

Most any call will do....I was using a Rocky Mountain. I heard it bugle as it left the trailer 4 hrs after sun up. It topped a ridge 45 mins later and stopped to look around. That's when I began with some soft cow calls, it responded immediately. I bugled, it got fired up and drove straight to me. Pretty simple really, I bet it'd work on Honda's or Suzuki's too.

Does unit 29 get a lot of hunters? I was thinking of going there for a day or two this week.

Had 4-5 bulls tearing it up Monday and Tuesday. Had several marginal shots that I did not take. Wed morning heard nothing but wolves in the same spot. The action had picked up 80% since last Friday.

I was up with my kid Friday and Saturday for the first time. Scouting for an upcoming rifle hunt. Very, very disappointed in the vast amounts of elkless areas and significant damage the sheep herds did. Been bow hunting that area for 7 years and never seen the herds crush that much vegetation that bad.

Ran into locals that said outfitters will be after the same elk so it’ll be interesting because the few elk are in a small area. Running out of time to find a backup spot or two or three.

depends where, we were up a few drainages and there were days we wouldn't see hunters, we weren't backpacking in either just camping by our truck

Oh yeah, my father is up there now. He said 29 and 30 were packed with road hunters. A couple guys tagged out this week in the area, a lot of hunters were getting frustrated with the logging companies still in there causing traffic back ups on the access road as the log trucks go back and forth. He's seen two herds of elk this week but neither had a bull with them. He had a cow tag but wasn't able to get one on the ground since they seemed to stay on private ground.

Fantastic season here in the panhandle hunted roughly 2 of the 3 wk archery season, never seen an elk int the woods, never herd a bugle. Only 2 elk I saw were while driving to my hunting area. 2 wardens who were working the area came by my camp said my story was the same at every camp and hunter they talked to.

We put 60+ miles in over 13 days, didn't find nearly the amount of sign you'd expect for that much effort. Finely saw our first elk on day 9. Had a great encounter with a 300+ heard bull but couldn't get closer than 65 yards. Had one more quick encounter at almost dark and then blew the same elk out the next morning. Consensus was the elk numbers were low.
