Anyone ever access Howell Island Conservation Area with a kayak? Since the causeway has been underwater all season, i was considering accessing the island from a kayak south of the causeway.

Thats really my main concern. I’m sure I can push across the chute to the island , but pulling a big deer back would be another story.

I'm sure you can, also sure I wouldn't wanna nav it with a bug buck on the way back tho, that river is very unforgiving

If you had 100 for the rope or so and tied it to the animal and paddled your way back with the other end might be an option, I’d rather wear myself out dragging it across the chute than wear myself out swimming for my life

Packing out the meat is a good idea as that will break down a buck to ~50-80 pounds.
Another option is to get a canoe—solo or tandem—as they could easily support the weight and size of a deer.

I’ve done it with a canoe.
It’s not for the faint of heart but I’ve done a lot of dicey chit with a canoe.

You could get it done with a kayak if you bone your kill out and have a real (sit in with a skirt) kayak to stuff it in.

I’ve used my kayak to access a couple islands and some otherwise inaccessible core ground but I’ve never packed out with it.

It can be done, and I have done it But please use caution...if the water is really flowing, the under current can be treacherous and swirling . Secondly, always were a pfd no matter what Not trying to discourage or scare but drownings do occur there When large volumes of water are flowing through the Missouri River in that area the river deserves respect and caution
