If you're able to get a can, it not only reduces more recoil than a brake but of course reduces the blast significantly. Can's on the kids guns are more important that caliber selection IMO.
If you can't do a can, a linear comp is perfect on a hunting rifle. It directs some of the blast forward and does a decent job at reducing recoil (the gas hits that plate in the front pushing the rifle forward opposing recoil forces): https://kawvalleyprecision.com/product/kvp-linear-comp-blk/
