Been sittin back thinking about how many great adventures I've been blessed to have living in Alaska. I got here near 45 years ago as a young man that was just really interested in getting out. Growing up in the 60s n 70s, it provided what gave me some good times. I miss being able to do the things I used to. Generally without much regard to personal safety and looking for places that others dream about. Got married n hunting n fishing along with growing a big garden and small livestock provided a majority of our food. I'd spend every minute I could spare getting out.
Had a buddy that had a 22' Trophy ocean boat. Heading out of Seward or Whittier for a 3 to 5 day trip we would come back with a lot of seafood n memories. Still remember one summer solstice evening. Midnight and the suns shining. Ocean is glass. Silver salmon shredding our hooks, whales breaching, porpoise riding the boat waves. Yeah pretty cool time. Or running little streams of water in a 14' boat with an ancient engine with a jet. Light weight and able to get out by yourself. Hanging out on remote gravel bars covered in bear tracks. Both colors. Eagles cleaning up our fish scraps.
The ocean is a great place, glaciers and you never know what you may catch. Huge halibut are great. But so is fresh shrimp. But my heart really followed moose hunting. Beautiful wife kinda liked having meat in the freezers. I always thought about a log cabin in the bush. And knowing I'll get oller some day. And having the comfort of home in the bush. All to yourself. Ohhhh yeah. Had the opportunity to stake 20 acres of land. Along the way getting the cabin built 16x24, was an adventure in itself. Lots of snogo time hauling freight, breaking trail, breaking snogos n equipment. 5--6 years worth. Then got everything built n dry n warm. Beautiful wife likes it that way. Me too. Fly out in the summer with a pilot that still changes us the same rate as 20 years ago. Getting dropped off out the middle of nowhere Alaska is like the coolest experience I've had. Surrounded by Mt McKinley and snow covered mountains. Ain't nobody coming to help if stuff happens. I get to the cabin n feel like I'm the most blessed man in the world. Got a little pond out front full of pike so there's always fresh fish n fun. Lots of wolves around. But I kinda suspect it's because there's moose around. Although there is a salmon stream nearby. Grab my ditty bag backpack n just go for a walkabout. Forage. Watch the moose. Lots of swans n such.
Yeah, some really cool stuff. And always new. Different.
Had to have my worn out neck fused, new shoulder, knee. Kinda slowing me down a bit. But the feeling inside never ends. Our kids n grandkids are our neighbors. Nice hanging kids that grew up with their, me. Remember one day when I was expecting to get picked up by Dave the pilot and our son n daughter were on the plane. They came out to put up firewood n clean up the cabin for winter. Dave asked if i wanted to do a fly over. Watching them heading north to the cabin riding a 4 wheeler just like when they were kids. Sure made this ol man feel something pretty special, kinda like passing the torch. There was a may have been legal, 50" plus, moose standing next to the generator shed/ meat locker when they got to the cabin. Our son had just harvested a huge moose I called in a week or so earlier so they had a great day. On a whim I invited Jordan Jonnas from the TV show alone up for a hunt. What a great guy and outdoorsman. Unfortunately his scope got damaged n he missed an opportunity. But had the experience. Nice thing about the bush, I still stay in contact. BTW he harvested a huge bull elk with an arrow .
Beautiful wife n me can go out for a few weeks at a time. Especially in the winter with snogo access. Eh what happens at the cabin stays at the cabin !!!!! I like going out n pretending I know how to trap. I mostly just enjoy getting out in the bush. Just me n the world.
Hoping to get a few projects done this summer, sand point well finished and having potable water at the kitchen sink. New dock, currently using an abandoned beaver house.
Eh, I'll admit that I really miss the time I used to get to be able to enjoy my time, out. Just out exploring any where any time. But feel so blessed I had my chance n ran with it. More memories than I can write. Reminiscing. And sharing a few times with you all. How it should be I guess. Not really my choice. Hope you have enjoyed my meandering around in my mind. I have, am. 20220129_084537.jpg9C50E56E-CF9D-4A3A-9EEC-45CEBEB04892.jpeg77A3B9D3-A852-4334-9FA9-AB762DF63FD7.jpeg992C20BA-5FE2-42F2-92F7-73EDE3B6D036.jpeg

So do you own the land your cabin out in the bush sits on?
How does the process of procuring remote land and getting permits to build in remote areas work?

Thanks for taking us along on that little mental journey of memories. You've done things that most will never had the opportunity to do. It sounds like you've had an adventuresome life.

Yes we own the land. Procured the rights to stake land with the stake recreational land lottery. Paid about 12 grand to stake for value of the land and survey, registration costs. There is no building permits needed.
Imagine that, simple beaucratic stuff. And a lot of work n time n some more money. And there you have it. 20 acres of remote cabin land in the middle of a kazillion acres of remote state land that will remain remote and I can go play around.
And share with our family

Ya know. I'm not anybody doing anything special. Just a guy who loves being in the outdoors. We certainly couldn't afford to go buy something like this. Trading guns n saving where we could.
But I kinda look at building a cabin 2 ways. With whatever building supplies you can get. Or as nice as you can get. We decided that logs were the best look and what we wanted. And the most bear proof. I like having my beautiful wife out n kinda like to make her life easier. And me to. My biggest problem. Finding someone that wants to get out as much as me. I will say I enjoy being by myself there. Months is great. With wife visits, best.
Mostly, just need a little help these days sometimes. Hard to admit that but life I guess. Nothing cabin time wouldn't fix.
