On my latest bull, my guide called in an additional helper to help us pack it out. It was challenging terrain, but between the three of is got it out in one trip..so Very heavy packs, and about 5 hours.

I have no idea how much to tip the extra guy.

Thoughts?

Last time I called for help a buddy and I got mine out after a long day of packing and using game carts. I gave him a $200 gift card for a sporting goods store for his time and effort. He was very appreciative.

Before I answer that I have a couple questions. Did he also pack you in and out of camp? Is he also serving as a camp jack feeding horses, stocking your tent with firewood, hauling water, and helping the cook, etc.? If so, $200 for the week.

Here we go....

What? A helper who’s brought in for five hours of work he’s already getting paid for?

I mean, a $100 dollar tip seems fairly generous.

We don’t know the total guide cost, nor do we know if the helper was helping the whole time, or if he was just a guy brought in for literally five hours of work.

I agree with your statement as well. If I disrupted my buddies whole day and he spent it helping me get my animal out, I’d bend over backwards to show him I was appreciative. But we’re talking about a paid employee of the guide, who the OP is saying came in for five hours to help.

Hate tipping culture! Some guiding businesses don’t pay directly to new guide or helpers, their pay base on tips. And that’s sucks. When I use guide I expect them to price me with tips and services included.

For me figuring out a tip is the worst part of a guided hunt. In today’s tip culture not sure there is a correct answer.

let’s put it this way…

Assuming it was the 2 of you and you had to go back for another trip. When you got to the truck on trip one, how much would you have paid to not have to go back for the other load? 😜

And I don’t think 100 is unfair for the record.

What we normally have here, and I hope continue to have, is an open environment where people can sincerely and honestly ask for help. All too often social media platforms devolve into some individuals using improper, emotional language to criticize or in some way belittle the OP (or another respondent).

That type of behavior is bad for everyone.

So, I'll just say it....IMO, people who make a habit of doing that sort of thing should be banned from the platform. How do we get an admin to review this?

Good question. I look forward to helpful and productive answers. Don't let the occasional grouch get between you and good engagement. There are lots of really nice helpful folks here.

Wouldn't it be 15% of what he's getting paid to come out, if normal tipping standards are applied?

That said, I'm going to give a better tip to an enthusiastic guy who's busting his ass with a great attitude, than I am someone who's surly and acting as though he's doing me some sort of favor.

Not really...restaurant standards don't really translate. Plus The outfitter is paying the guy, I'm just looking to show appreciation. A lot of guys work for outfitters for daily or weekly pay. He's getting his $300 or whatever daily rate whether he works in camp, spots, or packs. 15% would be insulting low in that scenario, but maybe perfect if the packers didn't work for the outfitter and were called in specifically for the pack?
I don't really know

I really appreciate the insights here. Haven't ever hired a guide, outfitter, or packer, but will eventually, so it's great to know. For some this might be common knowledge, but there's a bunch of us here who are flying blind, but with good intentions. The more info the better.
