I live at sea level and will zero my .270, 130 grain copper( ca.). My hunt is 12,000 feet. Any idea how much higher it will shoot? Is there a chart. The bullet muzzle is 2900 fps. Thx.

I guess like all variables it will be distance dependent. For a flat shooting 270 it wouldn’t be more than an inch or two within 300 yards. I believe you would need to know your muzzle velocity and the ballistic coefficient of your bullet to calculate it exactly.

It would matter more for a really long shot than it would for a more typical hunting range shot.

I went ahead and tried to attempt the calculations for you. You’ll notice that the difference at 300 yards between the two altitudes is 1.6 inches high at 12k ft.

It’s a difference of 9.7 inches at 500 yards.

34 inches at 700 yards

135 inches at 1000 yards.

What type of animal are you hunting?
What exactly is rifle set up? Gun, scope, bullet choice? Velocity?

Sounds like you have one heck of a tag and a lot of preparation and purposeful practice (https://rokslide.com/forums/threads...ice-posts-and-rifle-practice-shooting.165291/) to accomplish before the hunt.

Highly recommend you insure your delivery system is up to the task. Do your due diligence regarding scope selection. Personally, I would never use the scope you have on any hunt let alone on a OIL hunt.

Best of luck and please create a dedicated thread of your hunt!

Hey just so you know those above calculations were done with 2700 ft./s. Conceptually I think it still makes the point that it doesn’t matter much within about 500 yards.
Thx for the input.

Ok. Congrats. I know your tag. You are in for an amazing experience. First of all, your physical fitness will ensure your success FAR more than any other factor. You have the most physically demanding desert sheep tag on planet earth. Take it seriously. Your guide will find the sheep, but he can’t haul your butt up the mountain! Start training yesterday!

Aside from that, how accomplished are you at shooting distances out beyond 300 yards? Do you want to get better? Can you afford better equipment and are you willing to upgrade the scope/turret, study and learn ballistics and practice extensively? Or are you more a point and shoot, bang and flop, sub 300 yard, kind of hunter and wish to stay that way? That’s an honest question with no prejudice implied and there is no right or wrong answer, but it may dictate some of the advice you get.

You really didn’t answer the question. I get it. You’re accomplished and experienced. Perhaps “old school”. I respect that. I own many Win M70’s, a couple in 270. They are fantastic. And more than adequate. No one was questioning your accomplishments. I was asking about your desire to learn new things to take your game to the next level. I guess you kind of answered without answering. Best of luck to you.

I am more then confident to 500. Main reason I prefer bowhunting. My family has 2 of these 6.5 prc. That's shooting not hunting imo.
