I have and I don't. Another reason for my BAR - quiet and no recoil
Considering that a .375 is the minimum caliber allowed for dangerous game in Africa, I don’t see where your BAR is even part of the discussion.

My point was that it was asinine for the man to suggest taking a dangerous game rifle that is built for Africa up into the elk mountains.

Sorry I missed that but you are correct in needing a cannon for some other continents. I hunt for my winter's meat not entertainment. Until our grizz problem gets more extensive, I will stay where I am with a utilitarian pshooter.

I've shot or been a part 15ish elk hunts and most of them have been 1 shot kills with rifles ranging from 6.5 to 338. My last two were 1 shot kills, 5x5 bull at just over 300yards with a 7mm-08 and 140gr federal fusions and a cow at 412 yards with 338 win mag and 225 shock hammers. If both were shot side by side I'm not sure anyone would have been able to tell the difference in cartridge or bullet, both trotted about 30 yards, wobbled and fell

Big Bull - 1 shot hard quartering too @351 yds (143 ELD-X, 6.5 SAUM)

Medium Bull - 1 shot light quartering too @ 378 yds (33 degrees uphill) (156 Berger, 6.5 SAUM)

Small Bull - 1 shot broadside @489 (180 Berger, 300 Win Mag)

None acted hit but I knew I made fatal shots on them and they all died close to where they were hit.

This year; 3 elk and 3 deer with my 300 win mag (200 gr terminal ascent) 3 of my kids, 10, 13, 16, my nephew 10, and my mother who hasn't hunted in nearly 30 years. All were one shot drops. Pass through on most, although we caught the bullet under the hide on my son's selway bull (high shoulder, went through both) with his 30 yard shot. Shots were 30, 110, 150, 256, 260, and 400 yards.

Last year, besides several deer, my kids took 4 elk. 3 with 200gr eldx (one shot drops). Longest shot was 465. 1 cow with a 195 berger eol out of my 28 nosler at 350 yards, took two shots to the body, and later one to the head.

I will cop to shooting at an elk 5 times this year.

First shot: 340 yds with a 168 gr TTSX factory load from a .30-06. Bull was bedded and broadside. Did not appear to react to the shot.

2nd shot: same, but the bull stood up from its bed after the shot.

3rd shot: same but standing instead of bedded. Bull begins walking, wobbling off slowly.

4th shot: bull is broadside but walking. Goes down hard with the shot. Begins sliding downhill on his belly, head towards me. Clearly hurt, but head is still up. Not ragdolling.

5th shot: bull continues sliding downhill until I lose sight of him in the trees

All this took maybe 15-20 seconds(?) and 30 yards.

When I found him, there was blood in his bed, and I had hit him 3 times in the vitals (including breaking both front legs), as well as once in the lower front leg.

In retrospect, he was probably dead after the first shot. But why settle for “probably” when I could make d@mn sure?

2 elk, both went down with one .308, 165gr Accubond.

First, was a 375 yard shot slightly quartering away. Went 30 yards and dropped.

Second, was 300 yards slightly quartering to. Dropped where he got hit.

I’ve been successful on 4 elk all taken with 338wmag. My own loads of 215 gr sierra launched by 72 gr imr4350. 75-300 yards and all were bang flop. Had a rest and didn’t get the gitters.

One shot, 230 yds. Federal 180 Trophy Bonded Tip - 300 win mag. Dropped right in his tracks.

How many shots?
That questions going to have a wide range of answers.
My best was a complete pass thru with a 50 cal muzzle loader 106 yard perfect broadside double lung shot and clipped the heart on a big mature cow. She went 10 yards and fell over dead.
Worst was 3 shots in the vitals and a couple hundred yard recovery.

1 shot with a 7mm rem mag and 139 grain LRX. Bullet entered through the onside scapula and exited through lower shoulder on the offside. One hop, stood up on its hind legs and fell over backwards.
