How important is fill to you?

do you guys think the extra money on the 850 fill vs the 600 is worth it? the 600 will be heavier and less compressible but same warmth correct?
 
If you're carrying it on your back yes its worth it.
Only have to spend the money once but you gotta carry it over and over.
As far as warmth that's going to depend on manufacturer.
If they increase the amount of fill to the same volume yes it would be heavier and same temp ish.
 
It might be mental, but I'm always colder with a higher fill rating because of how thin they seem. So my solution is to over fill with the high fill options, which technically lowers the temp rating.....which is good because then I'm warm.
 
Personally, I think it's worth it. I tend to keep my sleeping bags a long time and spend a lot of nights in them. So, I feel its easy to justify the extra expense. I had a Marmot Hydrogen for about 13 years. And I've had my Katabatic Gear quilt for about 5 years. Each of those have 900 fill down. Well worth it IMO.
 
Yeah, get the 800+. The hydrophobic down is probably worth it too.

I have 550, 650 and 800 fill bags [gone!] and garments. In the beginning they are both about the same. But over time the lower rated down loses its loft to where it can be practically worthless.

I had an old 650 fill Kelty bag rated 20 deg -what a joke- I'm a warm sleeper and it would get cold in 50 deg.

My 800 fill Montbell bag is going on 10-15 years and its still warm as heck. I have jackets that are the same.
 
I'd take synthetic over anything below 800 down. There is zero reason IMO to buy anything below the 750 down anymore. The Apex and comparable insulation are similar weight to 650/700 with all the benefits of the synthetic insulation and none of the negatives of down.
 
When comparing bags between companies disregard the temperature ratings, they are set at the companies discretion. You are better looking at the loft. The higher the loft the higher the warmer the bag. You can find out what the loft is by this simple equation.
( fill weight x ounces of fill ) divided by square inches of surface ( length x girth ) that will give you your inches of loft. If you compare the loft it is more of an even comparison.
 
They have a EN temp rating on most high end bags now that is a standard test across the board because of companies declaring there own temp ratings
