Saw this old boy in Glacier Park few days back... was wondering how big he is?

Based on my zero sheep experience and playing Jay Scott's guess the score game, I'm going to say 171".

interesting that big horns get rated by score and dall sheep by age. First count was 10 years old with broomed lamb tips. Looks like a breeder fo sho

I imagine a lot of it depends on the circle(s) of acquaintances that one runs with.

Back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, almost everyone classified Dall sheep by horn length. Back then, only a few went as far as to classify Dall sheep by score. As Dall sheep hunting opportunities began to plummet in the 80's, 90's and even until the present (2016), newcomers began to classify Dall sheep through age. That seems to be a reflection of the difficulty experienced nowadays, in trying to find a ram or rams beyond seven (7) years of age.

The same can be said about bighorn sheep, whereas in the 60's and 70's almost everyone classified that sub-specie by horn length. As management strategies began to change in the 80's, people then began to classify bighorn sheep by way of an overall score. That seems to still be the case.

For the most part, I believe that the different styles or perceptions of classification are caused by the two distinctly different management strategies that are applied to the two sub-species (Dall sheep in Alaska and bighorn sheep in The Lower-48). The two sub-species aren't managed the same.

I'd say maybe 38 on the right horn with 15 ish bases, so low to mid 170s would be my best guess keeping my neck in my shirt. Could be a low 180 though. Hard to tell what the bases are.

high 170's, for me the money shot is straight on. gives a great idea of both horns, length, etc...

i've never seen one with a 3 and 4yr old ring set low the ear, that wasn't 175~, but different areas are a lot different. Great pictures, beautiful animal.
