How bad is this gunsmithing?

Id bring it up to them and get a thread chasing file and clean it up. It's not pretty but if it cleans up okay and works then id live with it if they could help me out. If they're assholes about it then demand a new barrel. Either way, never use them again. Lesson learned.

If that was a high end barrel I would have lost my shit.

I had a new barrel roll off the bench and bend some of the threads when it landed. I got a 5/8x24 thread file and it cleaned it right up. It was a carbon barrel so I was screwed if it didn't. They're great tools to keep around. You can normally rent them from your local parts store and return them. A die would work as well.

I'm new to barrel modifcations so I'm looking for opinions on this. Hoping this isn't a case of "if you have to ask..."

It's a T3x stainless in 6.5cm and I was going to put a TBAC suppressor on it. I took it to a local gunsmith to have it cut / crowned / threaded.

I left the TBAC flash hider there so they could do a fit check. When I picked it up, they had it on slightly more than hand tight so I mistakenly left without removing it. Got it off at home and it looks like this. Is this as bad as I think it looks?

There are names for such : butcher,
shoe maker, fraudster, etc.

I was quoted $170 to thread a barrel a couple days ago. Not cut and thread, just thread. Shop comes highly recommended. I balked at that price, but based on stuff like this I'd come out ahead just having done right one time at nearly any cost.
I paid $100 to cut and thread my stainless Tikka at a local shop. He did a fine looking job. I see some of the well known smiths with prices and they are not that high. Mine said normally $70 but being Tikka and short he worked more to set up.

I've never seen a "mark up" in price for cutting and threading stainless.... seems odd to me.

Stainless barrels are not bad to thread. They tend to cut just fine. I've had some that were a pita to ream in some spots....but pretty much uf you have sharp tools and rigid machines.....and don't work harden, it's just about the same as any carbon steel.

I feel like this thread should be a sticky.

Show a smith the OP’s barrel, then any of the other wonderful pieces of work posted.

Which of these am I getting and for how much?

More than likely he was using a dull threading tool and had it set slightly above center causing the tool to “wear” the metal out rather than cut it out. I’d be worried about damaging the threads of anything screwed onto those threads. That looks like it was done with a file. Also that looks like he tried to make the entire thread in a single pass and broke the sharp tip off the threading tool. Just saying. In any case he was not paying attention to what he was doing. How old was the “gunsmith”? Couldn’t have been very old, a gunsmith’s th wouldn’t/shouldn’t make it long in that trade with workmanship like that.

That’s very bad. And I looks like they cut the barrel with a dull butcher hack saw. Have you had a chance to shoot it? I’d definitely make sure the can is sitting in line with the bore

That's bad. Really bad. My cheap Axis rifle factory threaded barrels look 1000% better. If you're not adverse to maybe getting that cut off and then threaded again, look up Matt at LMG Firearms over in Milford OH. He threaded one for me last year, two weeks turnaround. He keeps crazy hours from 9am-2am Mon-Thurs, by appointment only. Friday it's 9-5 by appt. Maybe he could just clean that up too.
