My buddies and I own a couple just for elk hunting each September. Make sure you have a proper pack setup. The first couple years we took horses we just had riding saddles and tried to pack on those. Was a pain in the rear as gear was constantly shifting and sliding off.. probably not worth the hassle and cost of owning horses year round just to use them for a few weeks out of the year.. That said if your brother has some and is a experienced handler then by all means take them!.. This last season we had base camp 5 miles in and 2 of my buddies shot bulls the same day 4.5 and 5 miles in and in total seperate drainages..Those horses were worth every cent we had spent on them in the next 24 hrs. As far as the hassle of having them around camp. We're a 4 or 5 guy group depending on the year and usually just have someone swing by camp once a day to water and move them.. not a huge hassle but can be inconvenient at times. Imo there worth it if your going deep and have the right pack setup.
