What I think is really interesting is that different people have such different impressions of the same family of bullets. Example, Ive used sst’s in 7mm and .308 diameter. I found those bullets to be “soft”, as in, I believe they are designed to fragment to a degree similar to the much-vaunted tmk, eldm, etc, the main difference being that its a “traditionally-shaped” bullet with a lower BC. I stopped using them because they were TOO effective, ie wounds too big for my taste. I found them even a bit softer than ballistic tips. Any time it wasnt possible to stay off a shoulder I lost a lot of meat, and since Im mainly shooting average deer and only 1 or a couple a season, the loss was significant. But I cant recall a single one that didnt drop in its tracks. They are the reason I started using monos, which are on the other end of the bullet spectrum and generally create a narrower wound when all other things are equal. Interesting to me that some people said sst’s were too tough. It makes me really wish people would provide a specific description of what those bullets did on game vs what they were expecting, maybe even with pictures, so we could understand better and see things on average from a larger set of examples. Could even specify stuff like impact velocity, etc so you could really be pretty objective about it. Boy, that could make for an informational thread topic.
Seeing that the 223 thread is such a success, I thought maybe I would start one for the Creedmoor/260. Seems like people are asking a lot about using them and various bullets, especially for elk. I've used mine for the last few years almost exclusively. I have some pics of bullet damage, albeit not nearly as many as I should have, from a couple deer. I'll try to briefly describe the ones I don't have pics of.
If you have experiences, good or bad, post them up. Of course, pics are great, and add a lot of valuable information. Maybe it will take off, maybe it won't, but if it does it...
