Any other 7.62x39 hunters here?

They are used quite a bit up here by our First Nations Sustenance Hunters. They were dirt cheap ( bought one for $75) and ammo was plentiful and cheap so many people bought SKS's, First Nations and everyone else. Rumours are there are more than 1,000,000 in Canada. At one time I owned 7 of them. They are good out to 100 yards, if you practise with them. Most of the ones I had, I could hit a 4-5" circle at 100 yards freehand. I now just have the CZ in 7.62x39..... our government is getting ready to ban them like they have done to all of our other Semi-automatics. A good Russian, numbers matching SKS's now fetch $800+ For ammo, if you don't reload, try the Hornady Black.

Man you got lucky. Most of the ones I've had can group 4-5 inches off the bench haha. Anyone who can consistently and repeatedly shoot a 4" target at 100 yards with an SKS offhand not only has an amazing SKS but they are in the like top 2% elite tier of shooters. I'd be amazed to see this demonstrated.

I'm fond of AKs for pigs.

The first SKS i bought way, way back when would easily and consistently hit clay pigeons at 100 yds...i had young eyes then :).

My guess is the accuracy/precision of a 7.62x39 (SKS or AK) probably varies considerably with the individual rifle given the origins of manufacture.

I don't own a nice bolt 7.62x39. I picked up a ak104 PSA GF5. I know... PSA. Finding a good ak in the US now is tough. But i have a eotech on it and a dead air wolverine on it. I turned it into a registered SBR. I mostly use it for wild hog hunting.
Check out WBP. Got my Mini Jack 7.62 for right around 1000$. Runs like a top. All I've changed internally is putting in a KnS piston so it doesn't shear the rear trunnion rivets out when running suppressed (which is the only way I shoot it). Only issue I've had over ~3,000 rounds is when it stopped cycling during Moons Out Goons Out 2024. Dumped a whole bunch of lube into the receiver and it has been a machine ever since.

I’ve killed literal trailer loads of hogs at night with thermal and 10.5” 7.62x39s and cheap Russian soft points..shoot a soft point or hornady Sst , put it in the right spot and you’ll have some dead animals

The government gun ban is sad , do people actually hand in their now banned weapons or is it a catch me if you can kind of deal? . What do they allow you to hunt with? I assume no pistol/ revolvers ?

Any semi auto “tactical looking” or of military origin with detachable mags have been banned. The SKS so far has been excluded because of the fear that they would discriminate against First Nations rights, due to their use of the SKS for hunting. FN have many rights that others do not have in our Country. Some firearms that are included just don’t make sense, the GSG 15 and 16 are banned, but not the 10/22. The M1 Carbine is but not the M1 Garand (yet). Ruger #1 are banned because they fell into a category that limits maximum muzzle energy, but they don’t differentiate between calibers for this rifle. All 50 Cals are banned, regardless of action type. PCC’s are also banned. 3 gun and CQB disciplines have been basically shut down. There is a current amnesty period until Oct 2026 for us to turn these banned guns in, but they have not set up a program to do this yet. They are offering limited financial compensation. They ran a trial buy back a couple months ago in a small area that was estimated to have a few thousand of the banned guns, hoping to get 200 guns turned in, they only got 22…. Big failure.

To add to the confusion, some of the banned guns were classified as restricted firearms and therefore were registered with the government, so they know who has those, but many were not restricted like the SKS, SVT40, M1 Carbine, all of the .22 rimfires on the new list. So the compliance rate to turn these in will be very low, I expect.

For hand guns, it has always been that they can only be used at an approved range. No wilderness carry, unless you meet very stringent criteria by working in areas with dangerous predators. Obviously no public carry of any form. The newest restriction for hand guns is that we are not allowed to have one transferred to an individual, only to certain businesses with the proper license. This means that you can no longer buy one or sell one legally, all hand guns must be registered. We can still use the ones we own, but when we die, our estate has to turn them in. Not allowed to pass them down to our kids. The gang bangers still are shooting up our cities with them though, sourced illegally, mainly from USA and smuggled across our border.
