I have a Barnes Precision Basic Patrol Carbine 16", bought about 5 or 6 years ago. It seems that the handguard is quite HD and thus weighs quite a bit with a full length pic rail on top and not a whole lot of skeletonization. Does anyone know if these use a "standard" attachment to the barrel nut, if there is such a thing? I would like to find a lighter one to put on.

An aftermarket handguard will come with its own barrel nut. Exceptions to this are versions that use the mil-spec barrel nut. Replacing handguards isn't hard with a few tools and basic mechanical aptitude. The best tool to have for this project is a Reaction Rod-type device that goes through the upper receiver and locks into the barrel extension (chamber area) at the front and clamps into a vice at the rear. After acquiring Geissele and Real Avid versions maybe 8 years ago, I've not once used the polymer clamshell-type upper receiver vice fixtures.
