Homemade 2p tent

Finally. Another of my hair-brain ideas is complete, and I figured what better place to show it off than rokslide! In preparation for my upcoming mule deer hunt, I had borrowed a tent from a friend. A 6.25lb 2p tent.. well that just wasn’t going to cut it for me, as I’m 140 pounds soaking wet and just ain’t no way I was adding that much to my pack, as I’d likely fall over backwards. This began the research for a new tent, which let me to hiking pole tents, which led me to sticker shock. $300+ for a few pieces of material?? I can sew, and heck, they list the material used right there in the description!

So it began. The planning(I will admit, I had a plan put together but then came across a YouTube series where a fellow had already done this, and I figured better to follow his instructions than risk mine not working out). I ordered my materials and set off on my journey. And let me tell you. It was a journey. I didn’t really track time, but let’s say I now know why they charge that price for a tent. However, I’m one of those weirdos who finds odd satisfaction in saying i made it myself instead of hitting “buy now”, and so, I’m happy with my decision.

All in all it’s fairly straight forward. I saved probably 150-200 bucks, and learned a thing or two along the way. All my fabric is from ripstopbytheroll, zippers are overkill and from Amazon but it was had to find an 8’ long zipper. If I did it again I’d try something different and probably knock a few more ounces off. Pegs are from Amazon, all rope is USA made 550 paracord in a “don’t trip on me” color.

The tent itself weighs in at 2lb 3.8oz in its carry bag.

With 12 stakes and the rope it comes in at 2lb 15.4 oz. I’m not counting hiking poles as I’ll be taking them either way so doesn’t really apply.

That looks great, nice work! Is the design based on a Zpacks Duplex or something similar? And what material did you end up using?

I believe that is the tent it is modeled off of yes. The top is a silpoly membrane that is .93oz/yd. The floor is 1.1oz PU/silpoly which is a little stronger and more water resistant since it’ll be in constant contact.

Nicely done! I've wanted to embark on some MYOG projects but haven't had the time or space to do so. I want to start with a quilt for glassing.

That would be a fun project. I currently have my wife making me custom merino base layers. That was beyond my sewing ability, but they’re turning out really nice! Doing a 150wt and a 250wt with zip off pants.

Think that’ll be the end of my endeavors for awhile. It’s a lot of work.

Looks great man. Have you ever tried floor less? You might find you actually prefer it. I made a copy cat version of a kifaru megatarp several years ago and it has served me well. It will be on the mountain again in a couple of weeks.

In regards to the zipper, most people use zipper tape. Basically just a roll of zipper material that you can buy in any length. I just buy a few sizes by the yard and a handful of sliders for each size. Then I have it on hand to cut to length when a project arises. You can buy press on zipper stops or just throw a few stitches around the coil, on each side, to stop the slider.

I considered floorless but figured I’d do floored first just since I’m used to it. Maybe the next one. Thanks for the zipper tip.

Did you sew this yourself? Sewing always looks easy to me, but when I have tried it, it never seems to come out right.

Yep all me. My wife was going to help with it but I decided I liked the idea being able to say I did it all. Did a rain test during a pretty rough t-storm the other night and no issues. Pretty impressed with myself lol
