Home mattress recommendations

I have a little expierence in the mattress world. Typically if you spend under a grand on a queen size mattress, you won't have much life in the mattress. You can not pay a living wage and have inexpensive goods.

memory foam vs spring mattress. Personally the hybrid combo seems to work best. Memory foam is awesome, but it has a memory and will compress more and you will be in a hole. One sided mattress do need rotated to allow the material to come back. Roughly every couple of months, flip the head to the foot. You will need roughly 2 weeks of sleeping on one to truly get used to it.

The hard one for me to say is this: the mattress game can be real similar to the used car game.
When shopping lay down and put your feet up, if you are with your spouse, both lay down on the matt and roll around. The "boot" at the bottom of the mattress is for you to put your shoes on.

I have been sleeping on a water bed with the antislosh units in it for 48 years. I like being able to adjust the temperature to the time of the year. We have a synthetic fleece cover over the top and quilts. I adjust the firmness with the amount of water.

I sleep pretty sound with no pain. They are difficult to find.

I agree and I certainly have no problem paying for quality. A number of the king sized beds in the store I was referring to were $14,000 - $15,000+. That includes the frames of course but still seems out of line. For that price someone or something better be inside massaging my back while I sleep lol.

You have some great insight on the hybrid mattresses. I spoke with a sales associate in one of the other stores that had similar info.

As bad as I want a new mattress we’re going to take our time and do it right. Thanks for the reply!

It’s not talked about much, but mattress foundations are made to be a cheap way to support the actual mattress on under built bed frames. They aren’t contributing to comfort whatsoever and often don’t do a good job of staying flat. Even many semi custom frames with 1x4 slats under the mattress in place of a foundation are sized to save money and shipping. A legit solidly built frame with 2x4s spaced 1” apart will keep a king size mattress super flat with any weight.

Speaking of king size beds we always get two twin mattresses the same size as a king. Much easier to turn or flip the mattresses.

Speaking of flipping mattresses, we had a top quality mattress from decades ago that seemed to never want to die. High quality components and TWO sides allowed it to be flipped 180 degrees and top to bottom. We spent top dollar for our new mattresses that I assumed were also double sided, but they aren’t so there is no doubt it will last half as long as a doubled sided one. Shrinkflation.

My parents slept on a waterbed for as long as I can recall, but I can’t tell you the last time I saw one.

I’ve not out as much thought into the frame but these replies have definitely shed some light on it for me. We’ll put some time into researching bases as well. I appreciate the info!

Broke my back twice and a failed surgery, tried sleep number and it was ok for the back but hard on the shoulder. Regular mattress with box spring no good for me. Been sleeping on memory foam mattresses from Sleep innovations. They seem to do the trick for this old man.
Twice?! Oh man, that makes me hurt just thinking about it.

It can be deceptive looking at bed frames. The ones on the left are shown with a single nice deep high end mattress top or about the same height with a shallow top and foundation, but the two on the right are closer to what many full size top and foundations look like. You kind of have to plan on what height you like and make sure the stock works with your receiver, I mean frame works with your matress. 🙂

Local woodworkers can often duplicate these four post designs with better quality than furniture store models for the same price. As a cabinet maker and finish carpenter I always taught apprentices to have a few bed designs in their tool kit as good side gigs. From hardwood these can be whipped out in ten hours finished and ready to install at any height or width.

This post made me go down the rabbit hole again I was avoiding..bit the bullet and ordered a mattress today from mattress firm. They are having a decent sale. I just bought a king size Sleepys hybrid clearance 11" firm mattress. (Made by Sealy) Adding the LEO/MIL discount they do took the price to $551.19. I purchased through active junky which will get me 6% cash back. So all said and done I'll have it for $518.11

As the name stated Its a hybrid memory foam spring bed. If you don't qualify for the LEO/MIL discount some of the beds (the one I ordered included) come with a free remote controlled bed frame that will raise amd lower the head end.

There are a few different foundations out there, as a whole box springs are gone and they are replaced with something that looks like a box spring, but is actually solid. This started when the double sided matt went away.
The industry standard for decades for sagging was an inch and half, some places are starting to go to 2 inches. Sagging is measured with a straight rule laid all the way across the bed and and you measure the deepest sag, you don't press down, just put the straight rule down and measure.

Now what causes sag, time and repeated exposure. but what you put the matt one will dictate how much time it takes to take a sag. In a typical bed, head and foot and rails on a queen size bed is either 5 slats across the bed or 3 slats with center supports that touch the ground. Kings would need a lenght wise center support to hold the 2 "boxes". Because of the 2 boxes or foundations, king takes a sag more than queens, due to 2 solid sides in the middle of the bed. Kings have 2 boxes so you can get them in the house, the matt will bend the box does not. 2 twins side by side will equal the size of a king, but they are 2 twins not a king. This really comes in to play on King Adjustable beds.

Adjustable bases are pretty cool and you can spend big money and have lights and sub woofers under you or just get a basic head up unit. They do have the own unique systems, so the adjustable base does not always play well with you headboard\ftboard situation. you will have to check that out ahead of time.

Brands, i won't touch that one.

That seems like an incredible deal! I’ll check out this deal. Sorry I sent you down that rabbit hole with all this lol.

This is great information, thank you!

I just purchased a new king mattress and 7” foundation. The mattress is semi firm and 14” thick and double sided with a 15 year warranty vs most we looked at were 10 year of course prorated. I laid on about 15 mattresses over about 2 hours and cost was $2000. Double sided mattress make sense to me since you can flip it every 6 months it should last twice as long. Also this was rated 500 pounds per person even though my wife and I aren’t big. I have a bad back and the semi firm has worked out great. Also the store will let you return it once you slept on it for 6 months. They say it takes that long to get use to it. We tried a few mattresses in the box for the kids and they all have been great for a while but then seem to get soft and have soft sides.
