Curious as to what rifle elk hunts are still open in Idaho - are there still limited entry type rifle hunts going? Its a huge bull but I have a feeling it's a high fence bull but who knows as this point.

I say high fence. I would love to be wrong on this. But I suspect the only lines Idaho hunters are going to have to avoid are the lines at Juniper Mountain to pay for a farm bull.
Did, wyoming sell all its non resident tags, within 3 hours???? This year????? because idaho did
Next year will be really bad after this Pic gets circulated I promise you it will

Not trying to imply ID was not already crowded just doubt this ranch bull will be the cause if its worse. BTW , Wyo sold all its NR elk tags in a fraction of a second, with just the click of a mouse.

It’s hard to tell from the picture but it looks like the right side (left in picture) has a broken tine, so if you counted that one and not the little point on the left main. It’s a 9X7.

even with that broken tine, i'd probably still shoot him, haha

I have hunted Idaho every few years over the last 20. I see people, I see ATVs, I see road hunters. I see all of that in every western state I have hunted and at home. I recently got back from Idaho on a 10 day deer and elk hunt where I filled both tags with solid animals, not booners by any means. I saw a total of 4 hunters in 10 days. I am sure there were a couple I didn't see and I could tell folks had been in a few places ahead of me but there tracks were days old. The animals are there, maybe not right off the road, not out in the open. Just have to hunt a little harder and push a little deeper, they are out there. I am hoping after Covid and the many people that thought they needed to hunt for food will lose interest a little and the applications will go down and there will be a few less people. To those that were successful, congratulations. I am looking forward to next seasons already.

Update. Sounds like an outfitter guiding on multiple low fence private ranches. I won’t lie... being private ranches, it loses some of the magic I originally felt. I was really hoping this was taken on public land :(

Still. That’s a bigass bull and I’d be proud of it.

Private ranches, IMO, take away NOTHING. If low fence, those elk don't give a hoot. Meaning, you still gotta kill em. Just less pressure, which helps. But they can still go wherever they damn well please.

Great bull.

How? There won't be anymore nonresident tags next year.

I am pretty sure that is in the Frank Church Wilderness. He likely got dropped off at an airstrip, backpacked/hunted 30 miles to the river (cumulative gain of 54,000 vertical feet), and then floated out to Riggins in his pack raft. 🤫 😉

Seriously, if he was not on one of the high fence elk ranches, that is one heck of a wild bull, and I congratulate the hunter.

edit to add “high fence.”

I hear ya, Bakpakr. I am fairly confident at this point it was a private low fence ranch.

I meant the picture not the elk horns DONT impress me much (I kill game for meat not horns) I'm also not into high fence cage hunts and that's what that bull was a high fenced game farm.
That's like shooting fish in a barrel no spirt no challenge no skill needed.
High fence? Where did you get that? From the info we have, that’s not true.

as far as the bull, would you pass that bull up in search of a better eating one? Of course not, anyone who says otherwise is full of it.
I’m far from a trophy hunter, I’m at a geographical disadvantage to be one, and I just don’t care that much about antlers... I have killed some big specimens of every critter I hunt, and that’s enough for me.

I like the pursuit and meat in the freezer, but at the same time, I, like anyone else who dedicates themselves to hunting appreciates those specimen critters, even if you aren’t a trophy hunter, you can still appreciate those rare animals... just those rare encounters are special, whether you care about antlers or not.

if you kill one of those special critters, you will naturally want to share it, not necessarily connected to bragging (maybe it is for some) but sharing the animal that any hunter will appreciate. I like seeing big critters, I’m glad it was posted, it’s a cool ass bull.

with your attitude in this thread, what is your motivation for even being on this site? To me, these forums are all about sharing info and encounters with like minded people, and hopefully helping people out along the way when possible.... why else you participate? To tell people to get off of your lawn? Like it will matter...

your attitude in this thread just seems bitter, like you need something to blame... western hunting is blowing up, a pic of a huge bull won’t change that, it’s happening and will continue to.

we all are forced to adapt or accept the trends... I choose adapt. Why would you care how fast non res tags sell out if you are a resident?

it’s gotten crazy in my home state too, but it is what it is, I can still stay away from people, and will continue to... not as easy as it used to be, but still possible, I’m certainly not going to sit there and look for things to blame... that does no good

the picture of that bull will change nothing, that bull is dead now, he’s out of rotation... I’m glad it was posted, he’s a cool bull

I think all this speculations is funny. It's like we rank thinks as OTC/DIY/Public Land, then guided on public land, then DIY LE draw, and on and on until we get to high fence private ranch which I guess doesn't count as a real elk? It's silly. I'm the same though :)

A public land dink done DIY is a tough bull to get. But, a monster like this is a tough bull to get under any circumstances. I don't know what this means. Congrats on a sweet bull! That thing is a monster.

A monster like that, if behind a high fence, is not a tough bull to get. Just have to have the cash... So no, not under any circumstances.

If this wasn't a high fence hunt, we will hear more about it through various sources. Free range bulls like that aren't taken too often and are news worthy to many publications.
