I am currently building a 16 inch barrel AR platform (standard .223 / 5.56) and will be throwing a suppressor on as well. In the near term, this will be my hog hunting / “do it all” rifle.

The question is, do I go for a premium 1x-8x or 1x-10x LPVO and call it a day, or should I go for a more purpose built optic with higher magnification and greater light transmission on top and then throw a canted red dot on the side for the close in shots

**Disclaimer, I know the ultimate solution is to have built for purpose tools, but in the short term, I need to prioritize addressing the most likely usages / scenarios first

I am liking a LPVO with illumination these days. One optic per rifle. I tried the 45 with 🔴 and didn’t work for me.

What type of terrain, thick vegatation or open country, and typical shot distance?

Primary environment is moderate to thick piney woods in east Texas with a couple open plots with the furthest being a max of approx 230 yards.
Typical shot distance would be well under 70 yds and in

Some what of a sleeper optic is the delta stryker 1-6. Jap made, polish company, just an overall nice AR scope with a good reticle and daylight bright dot. The 1-10’s and 1-8’s lose too much on either end of the spectrum. A 1-6 would fit your needs well.

I haven't hog hunted in daylight in a few years. But my favorite was a 1-8 bushnell use to make.

It's very nice on 1x but still good on 8x for the longer shots even getting later in the evening.

Looks like they don't make them anymore tho :(

I much prefer a lpvo, or a good 2-7 although those are not in vogue these days. I have made snap shots at fast moving little pigs as close as 5 yards and been ok with a 2x base, although 1x is preferable.

Need a good QD mount for swapping out to thermal.

You may also find you want a shorter barrel once your can arrives.
