Hey folks,

Wondering what hitches folks would recommend for packing in panniers on a riding saddle. I will be packing in a trail crew with my two animals, walking in while packing one animal and packing panniers on the riding saddle for the second. Once I drop off the trail crew at camp, I will then ride out. I will do the same thing in reverse 4 days later, but pack in additional tools and supplies for a bridge that will be built and then pack out the trail crew.

I have a set of canvas panniers made to sit on a riding saddle, mantis and lash cinches etc.... The riding saddle will be packing mostly just bulky backpacking stuff, sleeping bags, pads, backpacking type stoves.

Best,

There is a wealth of knowledge here:

The single best online source of backcountry horsemanship I found during my journey.

If the panniers are balanced and no top pack then likely no hitch needed. Box hitch will lift it off the ribs especially if the saddle panniers are large and it can hold a top pack well.
I like ride high shoot far Arizona box hitch for a YouTube video. Really helped me understand seeing the way he switches his hands.

If you need to suck the whole thing down or deal with an odd top item the tie a one man diamond. I like Eric Lynn on YouTube because he ties it like smoke Elser where I learned the diamond or pat Puckett ties it the same way.

I lean towards a double diamond but have often run a rope from the horn to the stirrup then over to the other stirrup and then to the top and back to the horn. However it depends on the height of the panniers. A couple half hitches and you are there.
