Hipster hunting

My brother in law is one. He used to be a straight edge vegan, always complained about feeling like crap and definitely leaned to the left side of things. Now he's coming back from the dark side, has been eating meat again and say's he feels great. He say's he wants to go elk hunting this year so we'll see but I hope he does take an interest in it. His main reason to hunt is for the all natural meat which is fine with me. A trophy would be nice but I like having meat in the freezer.

Here you go Mike. They can also be seen wearing a murse (man purse) and drinking a 12 pack of PBR.

I was drinking PBR before PBR & Hipsters were cool............

A couple of weeks ago my wife came home from work laughing about a young female co-worker of hers. Seems this young woman is frustrated by these hipster guys who look like lumber jacks but can't actually do anything that doesn't involve an app on a touch screen. She was seeking some advice on how to find "a guy who looks like a guy and can get stuff done".

I can already see some increased SAR action this fall if this is the trend in the mountains...

Most of the hipsters I've met are just trying to cover for being poor and having been raised by single moms. With no father around to teach them any manly skills the try to fake it. They are trying too hard and I actually feel bad for many of them. I will say that they learn to fix up old bikes and I've helped a couple at my favorite beer pub learn to do basic mechanical work on their cars. Things like changing a water pump or an alternator. Once I got past their defensive persona they were happy to have someone teach them. As is illustrated in the article many are willing to get out of their comfort zone . They are obnoxious when you run into them as strangers though.

When in hs back in the late 1970s there were two schools of thought amongst us outlaws, those that drank pbr and those that drank strohs. Also a few rolling rock that at the time was el cheepo and now is for the elite.

The hipsters I know (IT types) are very smart and process oriented. Frankly, they could be a lot better for hunting than the majority of hunters riding around on ATVs.
This is true too. I've known a few of the IT guys who moved up and started making real money and the next thing you know they ditched the fixie and have a gazillion speed high dollar bike on the rack of thier new Lexus suv and a trophy girlfriend.

I think this could be good for hunting. The hippisters I have come across seem pretty smart, current on world events, opinionated and have strong political views which if pointed in the right direction could be good for hunters. They will at the very least be a supportive voice in the right to hunt.

The recovering vegetarian states: “I want my meat to be grass-finished, and killed as ethically as possible,” she said. “As much as I firmly believe in the necessity of animal protein and saturated fats, the commercial stuff is all toxic.”

This shows that the hipster crowd needs a better education about what words and phases mean. Grass-finished is a feed lot cow that is fed grass the last month or weeks of its life in an attempt to "cleanse" the meat. Its simply bogus. Just like the word "natural" on a food package. Meaningless marketing jargon. She wants pastured cow meat, not grass finished. Grass-fed is second to pastured as it is still potentially a feed lot cow that was not raised on corn feed.

From the last page: Based on the sales of species permits issued by the government, the number of hunters who shoot trophy animals is dwarfed by the group that hunt for food — deer, elk, moose and game birds.

So in Canada there is a food deer permit system and a trophy deer permit system? If you have a buck deer harvest permit and you shoot a buck with 200 inches of antler can you no longer eat the meat? A bull elk with over 390 inches of antler can't be consumed? Just, what, I don't even, what does this statement even mean?

I myself may be escorting a hipster into caribou hunting this fall thanks to my ex-wife. The kid has yet to call me and arrange a meeting to talk about his goals. I'll be looking for some trophy tenderloins myself.

Virtually all cattle are actually "grass fed", but most spend the last 6 weeks of their lives in a feedlot finishing on grain. Beef packaged as "Grassfed" doesn't go to the feedlot. If it is "organic", it does not receive proactive antibiotics or growth hormones in the form of estrogen. Technically, a lot of game meat wouldn't be organic because, depending where you live, they are eating crops that are treated with chemicals.

A lot of people seem to think that cattle are raised in feedlots, but its really not true at all. The cattle you see grazing in fields from Florida to Alaska are where most of the US beef supply comes from. 80% of these cows are raised by people who are part time farmers and raise the cattle as hobby, extra income or for a tax break etc. Once the cattle are of age, they are shipped off to feedlots for about 6 weeks and a growth hormone is inserted in their ear until they hit market weight and are then slaughtered.

All that being said, no cows, organic or not, can be slaughtered while they have antibiotics in their system and the estrogen levels in a serving of beef from a hormone treated cow is less than 3 nanograms (one billionth of a gram). For comparison, a head of cabbage has about 8 nanograms of naturally occurring estrogen. Personally, I prefer the taste of Grassfed beef (grain finished is rather bland), though the scientific difference between grassfed beef and grain finished beef is minimal. Grass fed as a fraction more of Omega 3s and less marbling. That's really about it. My wife will buy grassfed, organic (hormone free etc) when we do buy beef (which is kind of rare). Like I said, I prefer the taste, but I just completed a online meat certification course through the meat science dept at Univ of FL and examined the differences in these meats.

I'll be taking a "hipster" hunter out this Fall as well. She just moved here from LA, has been a vegan for years and it now signed up for her hunters ed class.

Why wouldn't the hipster go trout fishing?

He was to worried he'd drown in the mainstream!

What's wrong with PBR?

Nothing at all. In fact I like bringing it with me on hunts. It's just the chosen brand of hipsters which is why you are seeing a surge in its popularity. As someone else pointed out, I was drinking PBR before it was cool. I brought it with me on a Glamis trip and my buddies were giving me crap about it until it was time to pop some tops. Thanks to the moochers, I was out of PBR the next morning and was stuck drinking their Bud Light for the rest of the trip. Great beer for the money.

I grew up referring to them as Granola's. Why is there a new term for everything these days? "There is nothing new under the sun."

More like "posers". Granola's were more of the hemp clad, birkenstock wearing hippiecrites. At least where I grew up.

Totally agree here. My 18 yr old graduate fits a couple of those pics. He is savvy with music production and "tech". My wife and I are a little more of a mixed bag politically, so both of my boys have had a very rounded influence on issues as they have grown up. My son is so well rounded in his political views, we have told him he should be a political analyst. He just seems to "get it". He totally understands that the extremists on both sides are the problem. He won't go help me hunt anything(maybe someday), but he sure loves to eat the spoils.

To the younger crowd, we are just a bunch of old guys yelling to get off of our lawns. Young people who think like we do will have a much bigger influence on policy in the future.
