High uintas wilderness?

I grew up in Ogden, and my Grandpa used to go up there on horseback for mulies and elk. My dad hunted deer up there. I've only backpacked up there. I love it.

I've been in the Denver area for about 18 years now but took my son three years ago and did some backpacking with my brothers. The main issue I see, and it may just be me, is the huge number of people in the greater SLC area that love to go up into that particular wilderness. It's Utah's only real alpine wilderness, so it gets slammed with hikers in a way you don't see in Colorado.

This is why you need horses and go deep on the south slope, you may still see a couple people out for a few days ride on horseback but not likely if you don't hit main lakes. However for me horses is not an option and nearly 9 miles on foot did not separate me in what is considered a less popular drainage on the north slope. At least that's what I would be trying if I had horses.

I'm personally done hunting the uintas, I'd rather hunt the elk rut out of state and do day trips to the wasatch front extended for deer and elk. I would continue to hunt them however if I lived a bit closer to making scouting trips more reasonable, definitely animals worth hunting there.

Agreed. My uncle lives on the wasatch front and has horses. We've talked about this type of hunt, where we'd go in deep to some out-of-the-way unnamed lake or tributary stream to set up a base camp. I'd do a two week trip with wall tent, great food, fly rods, etc. Some of those south slope drainages have good fishing for native cutthroat.

I have been pretty lucky for the N Slope. I have tagged out 3 out of the last 5 years and could have all 5 if I had been paying attention and hadn't bumped my scope one year. I have taken 2 spikes and a 5x5 well 5x6 if you count the 1" point on the back.

Went pretty good so far. Was able to get my dad on a 4 point opening morning. Had to come back to work for a few days and my Dad has to head back to Phoenix then headed back up Thur night by myself. We all were able to see bulls just no else had a good shot opportunity. This was the first time I've hunted with my Dad and we both had tags. Only the 3 rd time in my life to hunt with him. I was pretty excited. His bull should be good eating.

Ok so while I am working I get a text from my grandpa at elk camp and he smoked a monster yesterday. Monster for the Uinta General hunt anyway. I have never seen a bull that big dead or alive up there. Kind of a crappy cell pic, but it's a nice 6x6.

looks like you guys are doing really well for the uintas.......how busy is it up there, orange everywhere? im a bow hunter so ive never seen it during the rifle season but always heard it's a zoo

i had a rough archery season up there this year, hikers everywhere.....although not much different than the extended wasatch front

sk1 I saw 2 hunters in the woods the first 3 days of the hunt. Most people that I see are just driving around on the roads. I hike back in a ways and can't say I ever really see that many people. I am sure there is areas around us that get hit pretty hard, but luckily in our area it's not to bad. I think the south slope gets hit harder then the North.
