I edc a folder, but I think fixed blades are the way to go for field use knives unless multitool.

If you're careful around bone, go with the stainless super steels like Elmax or s45vn. Stainless steels hold an edge better, but are less tough and more chippy. If you're not as careful, go with tool steels like 3v or cruwear. This is Bark Rivers steel chart according to their heat treat formulas. Apparently the new CPM Magnacut is supposed to be crazy good too.

If you're going the Bark River route and want a dedicated game knife, I think the gunny hunter lt, featherweight fox river, or featherweight hunter are all good bets. Personally, I'm waiting for the Fox River ext-1 in s45vn to drop in a couple months. My absolute favorite field knife of anything I've used.

Look at chop custom knives, and drool. You said high end, they are super nice knives.

I helped a guy I ran into in the woods quarter up an elk, he had a Cutco knife. It seemed to stay sharp through the whole elk. He only used the one knife for everything. I have an outdoor edge with the replaceable blades and it performed well on a couple elk.

I have the Havalom Titan. I'd have to agree fixed blades the way to go. I've had issues with my regular blade staying locked while In use. It's also a PIA to clean. Probably 4 years old.

Which one? Also I’m seeing some weights listed at under 3 ounces on them. Is that weight listed accurate ? Including the sheath. Sorry to hijack the thread.
I have never weighed mine but it states 2.68 oz online. I would think that’s just the knife and not the sheath. I’ll have to weigh mine

Got a free Benchmade Altitude this past year through a work promo. Typically used havalon or gerber replacement blades. Did my whole elk, then used it to scrape the skull and burrs clean and it was still razor sharp. Apparently I left it somewhere around camp cause when I got home I couldn't find it anywhere.......bummer. I will buy another one for sure.
