Hey everyone,

I wanna start now in planning a high country mule deer hunt within the next few years.

What is out there for books or online content to help a guy learn how to properly do some arm chair scouting in OnX and understand high country Mule deer behavior and habits?

I'm not looking for a story book, but good quality nuts and bolts type information.

Thanks!
Kyle

This may be more of general type info than you’re after but Robby Denning’s book has loads of good info from scouting to hunt tactics for all types of areas including high country. It may be just what you need to start building a good knowledge base.

It’s not geared towards On-X type scouting really, but will give you a great sense of where to look and what to look for when you get boots on the ground.

I know Rob's book. It's a great starter. But I'm looking for a bit more now.

You be careful talking about Robby D's book in here. We have the legend and some proud supporters in these parts.

If you are looking for something else, Id pick up David Longs book and some of the old classics.

Honestly, between watching YouTube videos of high country hunts for what to do and what not to do and reading live hunt threads from Robby and company through the years and reading the books, you'll be as prepared as you can be until you have some hunts under your belt.

I guess I didn't think I was talking rudely about Rob or his book. Ive read it and other content Rob has done and it's great.

Was simply wondering if there is more available that I'm not finding.

I was joking a little bit there. Not sure if most would agree Robby D's book is a "great starter" but I definitely didn't think you meant any disrespect. Currying favor with Robby D is advisable though. 😀

Are you new to high country mulie hunting? What kind of hunt are you thinking of doing?

The Edge is a great book and so is David Long's other book. I have both. Some great YouTube content from onx about internet scouting.

High Country yes, Mule deer hunting no. Ive hunted Mule deer in Western SD multiple years.

I guess some of the info I'm looking for is likely bedding areas in high country? What are they feeding on up there? Focusing on certain terrain or certain slopes facing a certain direction? Etc. Tips and tactics like that.

You're going to have fun. One major question is weapon choice. Lots more options for archery, much more difficult.

Mule deer in the high country bed in tree patches or rocks. They feed on the sagebrush/bitterbrush or whatever brush community exists up there.

You'll enjoy watching some hunts from high country areas and seeing this all play out. Lots of long range glassing but Robby D also recommends still hunting likely areas.

I'm very much looking forward to it.

I'll be archery hunting. Looking to do an early season hunt when they are still in velvet.

I just found Sean Morgan's site. Looks like he has plenty of YouTube high country hunts to keep me occupied for a bit.

I enjoy still hunting. I'm from Mn and thats how I hunt whitetail here. Just not into tree stand hunting.

search for Randy Newberg on youtube. He has a whole eScouting series that's got some good info
Is it specific to High Country Mule Deer? Ive seen all his elk scouting episodes which are exactly what I wish I could find for high country mule deer.

I may be wrong but I think Robby wrote an article somewhere about E scouting topo and arial photo's (ggogle earth)
Not sure where I saw it? Maybe Gohunt?
