High BC copper bullets?

which is why they are likely testing tipped bullets.... which I would never buy because they force you to install yourself and another point of potential failure.
For the record on Hammers.....
1. Hammer is not "testing" tipped bullets they have been out for a while. They now have 2 lines, the HHT and the HBC.
2. Installing the tips is no big deal and definitely not a point of potential failure.
3. They just got a tipping machine at their factory and all Hammers from now on will come with tips pre installed.
This information can all be fact checked on their website or the hammertime forum.
I suggest poking around on their forum, lots of good real world information on there.

I should add, the HBC is a brand new bullet (early 2025 release) so there isnt much load data on it yet.
There are a few preliminary loads on the hammertime forum but not many.

Ive got the 120 HBC rolling at 3002 FPS AVG, ES 14, SD 6, with a 5 shot 0.48 MOA group @ 200 yards out of a Bergara 6.5 CM with a 24" barrel. No critters shot yet as this bullet came out in January 2025.

If Hammer can’t get their act together with installing the tips, I will not be buying them anymore. To expect the customer to go through that incredibly tedious and annoying process is just insane. I bought one box to try out not realizing you were expected to install the tips yourself. Drove me crazy.

I have had great results with Hammer bullets, but I question the company ‘s business strategies. They are chasing way too many rabbits. There is no way they can ensure quality control as a small company with that many SKU’s. Like shipping bullets without tips, and batches of poor material, are they really thoroughly testing all of those various bullet types? I have my doubts. They seem to be in a rush to get stuff produced and out the door rather than doing it right.

The machine that installs the tips should be up and running soon. From the owner:

I really like Hammer projectiles and live close to their facility so they arrive next day. Ill leave it at that.

BCs and accuracy are useless if the bullets don't have great terminal performance on game. Hammer bullets have failed me on big elk before and Steve told me that it must have been a ..." bad batch of bar stock..." But they were very accurate with high BCs but QC on the metallurgy and design were flawed, which is why they are likely testing tipped bullets.... which I would never buy because they force you to install yourself and another point of potential failure.

So, don't chase high BCs, go for accuracy and terminal performance. The best I have found have been Barnes TSX and LRX.
I currently use the LRX and it’s been great was curious about other options

I’ve loaded a lot of rounds used to kill about a dozen whitetail and a handful of mule deer and pronghorn with 6.5 hammer hunters. Used in multiple rifles. They’ve all worked very well. Ranges from 150-500. For me the tips, while annoying, still isn’t as annoying as playing with charges and seating depths to get the same accuracy as with the hammers. I’ve been working for a good load for the 125 Badlands bulldozer 2. I have about 600 rounds of them. Still at about 1.5 moa for a 5 shot group. The 120 hammer hbc is as sub moa right away and with every charge weight and powder tested. So the tips seem a small price to pay. I’m also shooting the 69.5 .224 in a .223 and getting excellent accuracy and velocity. 2830 fps out of a 17 inch barrel.

I’ve killed some deer with Barnes and the badlands and as far as pure terminal performance goes the hammers are much more consistent in creating large wounds and have a knack for finding the cons. Badlands also had a bad run of copper too that resulted in some issues.

What powder are you using? I’ve used Staball, rl-16, and varget. Best I’ve been able to do is 2915 out of a 24 inch factory tikka barrel. Haven’t run into pressure but case capacity. The varget I have some room to go up and Staball too but accuracy was poorest with that powder.

I don’t find putting the tips on the hammers particularly annoying. Just another step in the process. 10-15 minutes for a box of 100 isn’t a big deal to me. For the cost, I don’t think of them as a high volume bullet. Short load work up, confirm drops, go kill things. I shoot cheaper stuff for everything else.
