Help with hunting suit choice.

Hello I am new to the forum and was looking for some advice on buying some quality hunting gear. I am going to Wyoming on a pack in elk trip and we are limited on weight we can each take. This is my first trip that isn’t a diy. I realize Sitka first lite and kuiu are the top choices but I’m a big guy and was wondering on the fit of these products I’m 6-4 and 265. I would like to get a waterproof gortex suit but am concerned if we have above average temps a guy will sweat his butt off. I don’t really care about the cost just looking for a happy medium that will work best in all conditions. Thank you for any help guys.

One thing about the more expensive stuff is the merino wool, you can wear it for 3 to 4 days and not smell like crap

I am leaning heavy to going with first lite merino wool for base layers for sure just wondering what to wear over it.

I'm your twin at 6'4", 260#

Love me First Lite merino base layers, synthetic stuff just doesn't keep me warm enough. Merino wool manages funk better. 2XL fits me perfectly.

Pants, the Sitka Timberline I think are about perfect as long as it's not hot out. Gortex knee pads and seat. Great stretch and pocket layout. I use suspenders. These come fitted to your waist size. Think mine are 42w x 32 inseam.

Jacket, Sitka Jetsteam. Gore windbreaker and pit zips are awesome. I like having a hood. I went 3XL on this for layering under.

Mid layers and rain gear I'm less specific on or don't have as strong of an opinion.

Actually I haven’t ever heard of it but just checked it out. Looks like really nice gear. Do you know if the sizing runs small.

I just got some First Lite gear in the mail today. Here in a couple weeks I can let you know how it does for a late October Cow moose hunt in alaska. Grabbed corrugate guide pants, catalyst top and bottom, uncomphagre top and bottom and their brambler gaiter. I’m 5’10” and 220lbs so I’m on the chunky side. Ordered the jackets in XL and the pants in L (puffy pants are XL) and it all fits well over a hoodie and thick sweat pants. Seems to fit my more chubby frame really well. Sitting outside at 40f smoking a cigar with just a hoodie and the catalyst jacket and I’m pretty warm too.
For rain gear I run PVC, the water resistance on the first lite stuff is fine for most drizzle all day weather we get up here, when it pours I put on the 100% waterproof stuff. I will eventually find some packable rain gear I can toss in my pack that doesn’t weight a ton.

I've found that this year the sizing has been spot on for me. SKRE does offer free shipping back and forth until your fitted properly. When in doubt give the CS a call they have always been able to help me decide what size would work best.

Welcome. I am close to your size. 6’3” and 250. Jeans are size 38. Not a picture of health but I do some CrossFit so I need a bit of room in the butt and thighs.

I run a lot of Sitka. Xxl tops. I have to size up to 42 to get ass and thigh room. For your trip, mountain pants or timberlines would be good. A jetstream jacket and a kelvin light hoodie. I am a big fan of their cloudburst goretex. I have a storefront jacket but it gets left behind unless I am expecting rain.

First lite is great. I find their newer stuff a bit slimmer fitting. I wear xl pants and xxl tops. Catalyst jacket is a great light weight type and their guide pants are great general purpose pants. Not sure about their rain gear these days.

I like kuiu pants. I tried a few of their tops but the size was all over the place. Big fan of their attack and pro pants but they are slim. I had to go up to 40 to get room for my ass.

I was looking at the cloudburst today I like the idea Of the regular fit since I’m a big guy. The jet stream I see is performance fit not sure how different they would be. My only fear of the cloudburst as my outer layer is being to hot while hiking. I will have plenty of under layers I can strip off.

I sweat a lot. Unless I am expecting a lot of rain...More than 1/2 the hunt...I don’t hunt in rain gear. I just haven’t found something that can move as much perspiration as I produce on the move.

I prefer a soft shell and a lighter set of rain gear when needed.

I hav plenty of room to layer under a 2xl cloudburst and a 2xl jetstream. I couldn’t tell you how The fit differs between the two.
