Maybe I just need readjust my own expectations but I got a quote from a shipper that my taxidermist works with for 1k to ship a well pedestal from PA to CA. Is there other viable options, is this market or high? It is too late now but I would have had it done closer to home had I known.
Thanks in advance for the insight.

Seems about right my hunting buddy paid a grand shipping on a mule deer wall mount from Wyoming to Maryland. Better off caping and freezing then taking it to your local taxidermist.

guess it depends on dimensions, but i shipped a 450# 40x48 pallet, 36 tall, from texas to michigan for 250 bucks. a taller crate with taxidermy in it id think shouldnt be 4X that. this was shipped via fastenal fyi.

Expensive today for sure, Guide we hunted with in 2011 had 10 brought over from South Africa for $1200 in one hugh crate. But a grand to across country seems reasonable.

Guessing it’s a deer wall pedestal.
That sounds high. I’m a taxidermist and have shipped mounts across the country for considerably less. Is the taxidermist making the crate? How much of the cost is crating and how much is shipping?

But would still need to ship “freight”. There can be large differences between shipping companies but they should go by weight and dimensions. Neither should be significant. Is it shipping to a business or residential? A business destination can be cheaper.

IMO, that's a very fair price. I just paid $650 to ship a pedestal mounted mtn goat from South Texas to West Texas, 360 - 400 miles. A cross country from PA to CA, I wouldn't hesitate in paying that price.

There are several transport companies who specialize in shipping meat and taxidermy. I would not trust a regular freight company to ship a mount unless it is securely fastened inside a sturdy wooden crate. Either way, it is going to cost nearly a grand. The freight company will be less expensive but building the crate will make it about the same price or more.

I just paid $750 to ship an Aoudad wall pedestal from Texas to SC. I was expecting a few hundred bucks, but everything costs more these days than I expect it to. That said, the delivery arrived in perfect condition and the gentleman that delivered could not have been nicer.
