Help Me Build A New Arrow

Hi All,

Looking for your insight on building a new arrow setup for western big game, mostly for Mule deer but may be used for Elk too if fits the bill. I have around a 27" DL, 70lb draw weight. Previous arrows are 350 spine and cut at 27.25" by the bow shop I had my bow first setup at so if that spine or length seems off let me know. Trying to get to the mid 400s on weight.

With the standard nocks I am at around 417gr, with the Nockturnals im around 433gr

I'm new to custom arrows so any constructive insight is appreciate. For the past 5 years I have just been using what the bow shop set me up with and having them match it whenever I needed new arrows. Let me know your thoughts! Looking to get everything through Lancaster Archery and have them install all the components as well.

Gold tip Hunter XT 300 cut to 1/2 to 1” in front of your rest with 50 grain insert and 3 Blazer or q2 vanes.

Nothing wrong with your plan! Any arrow with similar gpi in a 340/350 spine will work also. Length could be shorter if desired.

Only suggestion - stick with fixed blades to ensure you get enough penetration with shots other than perfectly broadside.

Your fine with the hybrids, they will blow though any mulie alive and are way more forgiving then almost all fixed heads. You’d be hard pressed to find a better head. But I like the 1.5 way more than the 2.0 from a penetration standpoint
Bump the V Force up to .300 spine,
use the stock 22 grain insert with an added 20 grain weight.
Keep everything else the same and it get you into the low 420 ish grain TAW and closer to 450 with a lighted nock if go that route.

You’d add the weight by screwing them into the back of your insert. They sell weights, tell the person building the arrows how much you want to add to each insert… 20 to 30 will get you where you need to be.

The reason i am saying to go up in spine is because you want more TOW arrow weight, the 300 gets you that weight in the shaft and allows to add more weight up front. The more weight up front weakens the spine of the arrow.

So For you to hit that 450 grain mark with the .350 you’re going to have to add a bunch of weight up front…. then you end up weak spined shaft for your set up.

Going to 300 prevents that.

Gotcha, Carbon Express has a brass insert thats 50gr but cant tell if itll fit. Shows .244" ID not sure if that .001" will matter

I think you're underestimating just a bit. I believe Victory arrows are factory 3-fletched with Bohning Blazer vanes, which weigh around 6 gr each. Assuming 18 gr of total fletching weight, your TAWs should be 430 and 446 gr. Both of those qualify as "mid 400s" in my book. If you want to increase TAW a bit more, add a weight screw behind the insert. I think you'll be fine with 350 spine if you keep total front end weight under 200 gr, but there's no harm in going to a 300 spine shaft.

I would skip the brass insert. Brass is marginally stronger than aluminum and it's just used to add mass. I'd run with a CMI 50 grain. I'd use a 125 Sevr. This will be a much stronger setup for those arrows.

not sure i'd have LAS build me arrows. they're my local shop, but when I had them cut for me last time they acted like they'd never even heard of squaring and ended up not even doing it after I asked. black ovis used to be my go-to for arrows, their process was solid. buying today, i'd look into gohunt's process, build myself, or go with a custom builder.
