I have a Tikka T3x Lite Compact in 7mm-08 I’ve been considering selling or keeping and replacing the stock. I’m looking at the Peak44 Blacktooth and Pure Precision Altitude. Anyone have experience with either of these?

i have four tikkas in which i put on proof carbon prefit barrels (well, one is a carbon six) and changed to the pure precision altitude stocks. zero issues, easy peasy.

Of the two stocks you are looking at the Altitude appears to have the better grip and the Blacktooth has the better comb and butt. If I were choosing between the two, I would lean to the Blacktooth. In my opinion, the low butt and high comb of the Altitude is a bad combo for recoil control. The Blacktooth’s grip is actually pretty decent for a traditional type sporter stock. I’ve owned one. The negative comb of the Blacktooth is a way better design than the Altitude. It’s not negative enough to buy you a ton of recoil control, but you won’t be fighting it like the low butt and high comb of the Altitude. Honestly though, I think the Peak 44 Bastion is probably a better design than both of these.

Does recoil control matter on a 7mm-08?
Why would it not? We aren’t talking about a pain threshold here. Its not about questioning anyone’s man card. It’s about direction of recoil and the amount of muzzle rise. Shooting one of those low butt stocks is annoying compared to one with the butt closer to the bore line.

I guess my question was more "would recoil control be prioritized over something else for a 7mm-08." Certainly not questioning anyone's masculinity. I have never bought a custom stock so curious of the logic to the various trades people make when deciding which is for them.

The echelon versa is better than both of them both from a weight prospective and grip and comb.

I suppose it depends on your priorities. I tend to view that low butt design as a deal killer. Because it overrides the core purpose of a stock, which is to make a gun shootable. Even if a stock has great ergos everywhere else, it meets weight goals, etc. it still sucks to shoot compared to a stock with a butt closer to the bore line.

The low butt/high comb is nice for an instinctive, head-up position for shooting shotguns. But is usually paired with an exceptionally high rib to lower the barrels in-line with the butt if any cumulative recoil is involved. On a design like that it just causes any given amount of recoil to be directed straight into your face. Of course its no big deal pain-wise for a few shots, but it does negate to a large degree the benefits of going with a lighter cartridge in the first place, ie recoil control; especially on a lighter-weight rifle. Id take either of the peak 44 stocks over that one. I like the traditional grip for carrying a gun at the ready still-hunting, but if thats not a focus the more vertical grip can be nice too.
I actually really like my allterra stock as well, thatd be another with a moderately negative comb but still a fairly traditional grip. (I say actually b/c it has fallen out of favor with this site due to the grip having a longer reach to the trigger, which hasnt been an issue for me). If you want a very traditional stock, the ag privateer is another that has a slightly negative comb.

For a hunting 7mm-08, I would prioritize the following (this is just me, not a suggestion for anyone else, and I do reserve the right to change my mind):

1) accuracy; any improvement over Tikka stock is welcome
2) weight; additional weight from Tikka stock must be inversely proportional to the accuracy improvements (I'll tolerate a heavier stock if it demonstrably improves accuracy)
3) carry ergonomics; I'm going to be carrying it way more than I'll be shooting it
4) pleasure derived from actually shooting it (I don't range shoot very much, couple few times a year)

Aesthetics and cost are somewhere in there too.

I had the pure precision (used to be mesa) on my tikka before going to a chassis. I really liked mine and didn’t any complaints do you have a specific question or want a measurement off anything I still have mine sitting around.

I have a pure precision (couple of them actually). No complaints. I also shoot factory stocks with a little cheek riser and find them perfectly useable. I’m not convinced there’s much to gain accuracy wise. I don’t know that I’d spend the money on stocks if I was doing it today.
