Help choose new cartridge.

You have 284 win brass on hand and both 338 federal and 338 RCM are on your list. 338-284 lands you between the Federal and the RCM, and works great in a short barrel.

Do you have any experience with that wildcat? I was looking at the 284 variants and it definitely is a consideration, would need to find dies and a barrel maker for it though as its not very common

I do. I had one done by McGowan. 4D has a reamer, so pretty easy for a smith to get a hold of it. Strangely enough, Carbon 6 has it as an available chambering without extra charge. Die’s were straightforward to get, though expensive (Redding has them on their list of available, but still have to pay the custom fee). I had Lee make a factory crimp die (I crimp hammer bullets). Think I’m going to have a Lee collet neck sizer made as well. Those are just a really nice way to process reduced cast loads since they never really grow anyway. Mine is on a tikka action, so I have plenty of length, but I think everything I’ve shot through it would fit in your magazine length. I thought about extending the throat a little to seat bullets a little longer, but there wasn’t really much to gain and it shoots too good to mess with it.

Reviving this...have a long action origin with mag bolt face on the way and a .30 cal suppressor in jail. 300 wsm loaded for long bullets, 300wm the same, 300 prc, or 7mm prc?

Not wanting to run a detachable magazine, prefer BDL for hunting, and this will primarily be for hunting.

300 SAUM or 7 SAUM, light recoil, efficient cartridge, brass is available and high quality, also it will kill anything in North America. I'm personally building a 7 SAUM in a long action (Tikka) for that reason, high BC bullets, lower recoil than a 7 PRC and its 95% of the cartridge using less powder.

338 RCM!
6.5 Prc is the same case as the 338 RCM.
I've necked ADG 6.5 PRC up to 338 and 375.
neck up to 7mm
then 308, anneal
338, anneal, mandrel, trim.

I'm getting 2800 w/225's from a 24" barrel pretty easy.
20" would probably still go 2700.
