Hi everyone,My name is Matt im 33 from Ohio.Just wanted to introduce myself!
Ive been to Colorado a few times elk hunting and yet to harvest an elk and looking forward to this upcomming sep,The archery season goes by to fast!
I have a question for you guys if you dont mind.Ill be taking the family camping in colorado this comming june to my hunting grounds.this is a public land area and wondered if it would be good to scout a bit for this coming sep.or would it be way to early scout?thanks guys and looking forward to making new friends.

you bet would be a great time to scout. perfect time to figure out access, trails, water sources, ect. as for elk sign ,look for signs from last fall. maybe an area with lots of rubs,or elk "highways". even heavily used bedding areas can be seen the next spring or summer.
have a great time with the family, and good luck.

Bone is very right. Anytime you can get to your area, you will learn something new. There is nothing better than just spending your time in your area, and learning the area itself.

Never a bad time to scout, but I wouldn't focus on animals too much. The other guys nailed it, focus on accesses, water, etc. However, keep in mind, snowfall across Colorado is very high right now. If the trend keeps, scout high. Good grass in the high country through all of summer will help keep the elk high. Not all of them, but its just something to be thinking about.

As a rule of thumb for me, if there is snow on the mountain in May/June, I tend to hover around the snow line if I want to see animals. I also want to know where the calving areas are because that is where the best food will be and typically the elk won't be too far from there in September.

There are some areas closed to access during April - June. This is for calving and migration. Check with the local office before you head in.
