What do you say to support or not support the statement that a very heavy duty outer material for a sleep pad is worth the weight penalty?

The general range that I see is from 20/40 to 75 denier.

Thanks.

I use the Xtherm year around. It has 70D on the bottom and I like that burliness. I do carry a thinner/lighter pad for bikepacking trips and I would consider the same for a Thru Hike situation. But, day to day hunting/scouting , which is already on the heavy side and often sleeping on ground that don’t get any type of frequent camping use, I like burly.

Hmmm. I am a big fan of ground sheets. I have a couple in syl, one in dyneema ($$$) tyvek and a 1/4 foam pad from seek outside. I tend to prefer one of them over a heavier pad fabric. FWIW the Tyvek and sil are 6-8oz. The dyneema is 4oz

Is the top material thickness as important as bottom material thickness? What if you have your dog along?

From my experience a dog will quite easily punch holes in the top of an Xtherm. Fortunately I had enough tape to cover all four holes from her.
