Hello All,

Can you explain the benefit of using an insert over just using a heavier broad head. I see people using a 50 grain insert with a 100 grain BH. Why not just got with a 150 grain head?

6 bh's comparison.jpgGood question....why wouldn't you want more steel in the working end of your arrow?

Some guys use the heavy inserts so they can use the BH's they already have on hand.

I prefer the heavier 150 gr Buzzcuts and VPA's....comparing those to a puny 100g head is an eye opener. The pic shows the VPA 150 3 blade far left, all black is the VPA 150 2 blade [you have to hold this to see the difference- beefy] the 150g Magnus Buzzcut on the right and the rest are 125g asstd heads.

I prefer a heavier head if I'm hunting elk especially. One of the reasons that I have seen is that some bows aren't tuned properly and thus with a larger broadhead up front, the tuning issues are magnified. Some larger broadheads do also make a little more noise in flight they say. I like having more cutting up front.

Yes I am trying to learn proper arrow building and bow tuning in order to get avoid this problem. Having trouble on how to start to avoid completely messing up my bow and arrows.

By going with a heavier insert you can have more options on broadhead choices in the 100gr-125gr versus going with a 150+ gr broadhead. Plus you also have the ability with some insert systems to add weight to the insert to customize how much weight up front you want to run(example Gold Tip FACT weight system). This is why I prefer to set up guys with the inserts over just a heavier broadhead but it honestly comes down to personal preference on what you like for your personal set up.

Starting from scratch, I would put the weight in the head.

If I already had hundreds of dollars of BH's I liked and wanted to use but wanted more arrow weight, I would look to weighted inserts.

My arrows are 483 grains now pulling 70#. I just bought the bow so and have to site it in more, and I'm sure tune. I want to play around with my set up and see what flies best. Currently I have no insert in the arrow but I'm shooting a 125 grain head.

I prefer the brass inserts due to broadhead flexibility. If I want to shoot a lower cutting diameter fixed head for elk I can do so then spin those off and spin on the spitfire max for whitetails and knock honkin big holes in 'em. Thats for my compound setup, for my recurve it all big heads and standard inserts. Funny part is there is only 10 grains different in total front weight between the 2 setups. I just wasnt smart enough to build them to be interchangeable. LOL

This makes a lot of sense thank you!
