Hearing protection ?

I always just use the little foam roll up things you put in your ears. Wondering what is the “more better “ ones. Without going ridicules on $$$. Static, active didn’t realize there was such a huge offering. I like the smaller ones you put in your ears rather then the “ head phone” type. But if the head phones are better, not against them. What do you suggest ?

There are a couple of threads on this somewhere and someone posted an article on hearing loss yesterday. My view is anything is better than nothing. I keep some cheap plugs in my bino harness and pack. I like the ones with a retention cord the best. Easier to insert and I am less likely to loose them. Decibulls makes some good semi custom ones. I play with the plugs that have a rigid neck band this year. Not sure I like those as much. Muffs on the range for me and when I upland hunt.

Suppressors are great but raise the pain in the ass factor for traveling, etc. they definitely reduce sound but are not “hearing safe” on their own.

Would like to stay under a 100.00 if possible. Was looking at decibulls and it looks like they have at least 2 different ones. 25.00 and 50.00 ( or it may have been 75.00) the more expensive ones were “percussion “. And these are the ones that made me ask what are good ones. I have no interest in a suppressor at this time.

Roll up foamies. The better option is custom poured. I hate the ones with baffles and the NR isn’t as high.

Foamies plus muffs if you want a tad more. I hate muffs period.

Custom pours are pricey and you gotta go to an ear doctor to get them. Plus you have to replace them every few years because your ears never stop changing. Hearing aids are even more pricey....so pick your poison.

They're not hearing safe for extended periods of time but they are hearing safe for most hunting situations where you're firing 1-2 shots. Depending on the suppressor I'd put some earpro on if I was planning on shooting more than 3 times.

I have a love/hate relationship with muffs, but I've had 2 pairs of these (https://www.amazon.com/Howard-Leigh...=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B001T7QJ9O) for years - $52 on Amazon.

I got a pair of passive poured ear plugs years ago at a gun show - not from a doctor and fairly cheap - but like 16Bore said, they may not fit exactly the same right now.

I also just got these to have around my neck when deer hunting

I’ve found that I need to double up on hearing protection when shooting large magnums with muzzle brakes. If I don’t, I’ll get pretty bad ringing, I actually get mild ringing when doubling up anyway.
Use the highest rated NRR you can find on both the plugs and ear muffs. I think that’s the best you can do short of trying to divert muzzle blast by some means of home made baffles

And ear muffs over that. The molded ones are very comfortable. You won't mind wearing them all the time. That'll save you if you forget to put the muffs back on. You need both.

For hunting I havent found anything as comfortable for wearing for hours. The passive products like Allen Sound Sensors and Surefires plugs work, but they're not comfortable and tedious to keep in place. Instead I wear plugs on a band around my neck and slip them in before shooting. I have both forgot to put them in and had animals get away while trying to put them in place.

Pay whatever is necessary to get good ear protection. Hearing is something that never comes back once lost.
