I need some help and guidance. I would like to get something that will protect my ears from gun blast but also can enhance sound to help with my old ears. I have mild to moderate hearing loss. On the cheaper side I have looked at the reviews on Axil Xcor Pro and Walker Disrupter. Does anyone have experience with these? Or is there another brand I should look at? On the more expensive list there is ESP Apex and Soundgear Phantoms. Are they really worth the extra $$ ? Any help is appreciated.

I bought a pair of the XCOR Pro on their 50% off Labor Day sale. They're definitely worth what I paid for them. Background noise with protection mode on low is OK at a range or on a construction site, but distracting in low ambient noise environments. Mid and high gain are pretty much useless to me.

Soundgear Phantom is FDA listed as a hearing aid, should be possible to use insurance for at least part of the cost.

One other brand I forgot to mention was Tetra. The Alpha Shield model is interesting with the custom enhancement for the different outdoor sounds. Not sure if it is just hype or not.

I think the Otto Noise barrier micros are the way to go. They aren’t cheap, but they are effective at the range, pretty good in the field (much better than Axil), and comfortable enough to wear for hours. Plus good battery life and the storage case charges them several times over.

I haven’t heard of the other brands mentioned here that folks are saying are expensive, so I will check them out myself.

The Ottos are private-labeled Etymotics.

If Lucid releases an updated version with BT, I'm in.

Been checking out the Ottos. They’re smaller design so they should fit my small ears more comfortably.

I use the Sound Gear custom devices. They are superior and very comfortable. You have to get a MOLD made at your audiologist.

Old thread, if you havent bought any yet, Axil wired ear buds are on sale at Rogers sporting goods for like $80 with bluetooth too
That's what most people I duck hunt with run

I purchased the Otto about two years ago and used it extensivley for hunting and some targets shooting. Very comfortable(foam tips) and the enhanced setting does a great job. My son has the Axils and he said the difference between the two is the wind, less interference with the Ottos. Not a fan of over-the-ear muffs because it's typically too hot while target shooting and wanted something "slick" running around in the woods. My recommendation is to leave the ear buds outside of case when not using, I bought some small, thick zip bags that I throw in my harness and pop them in the charger the night before. I've read many reviews saying the Otto battery doesn't last and I believe this is because ppl leave them in the charging case.
