I like my Petzl TakTikka RGB. Think I paid $59, but you can find it cheaper. Had a BPS gift card I needed to use up. Red, green blue and 4 brightness modes on the white light.
Black Diamonds new Spot and Storm are the cats arse. I used Petzls in the military for years and have no idea why I didnt switch to BD sooner. $35 gets you a great HL thats waterproof, has low setting for most tasks, and 200/250 lumens for those times when you cant quite remember where your tent was after taking a 3am squat. Beams are great and dont hot spot too much like some other brands.
Ive had good luck with the 5 or more black diamond (BD) headlamps Ive owned with the latest being the 'Storm" I believe its called. I dont think Ive paid more than $50-$60 for a BD headlamp and had good luck with them. None of the BD lamps have failed but Ive just upgraded over the last 15-20 years as technology has accelerated . I did have a mammut headlamp break and had a few petzls that were good.I would buy the storm again for sure if I needed a lamp.
More people need to look at the reviews. One thing I really like about the BD Storm is you can make it not turn on while in your pack. Cannot remember how many times I have had a flashlight or headlight get turned on in your pack to only have to change batteries at the start of a trip. Picked up a BD ION last week for under $30.00 weighs in at 1.7 ounces if I remember right. I doubt it will turn on as I had to ask how to turn it on. Has a slide motion with your figure to turn it on. 200 hr on low 4 hours on high at 80 lumens. I think it also had a red led option? Don't have it in front of me but looked like a good way to burn my REI bucks. Only going off memory from last sunday.
Someone had posted a link to a crazy bright one that is kinda home made by small company in Australia. It was pricey but looked awesome
Can't find the post that had the link
I've been using a Streamlight headlamp and mainly only using the green light to get in and out of the woods. A set of batteries will last a couple of years with alot of use. However, I'm new to the backcountry illumination scene. I've looked up some of the brands brought up on here, but the different makes and models makes my head spin. Lol
I'm looking for a good lighting source that has a long run time and I'm not gonna use rechargeable batteries. What's the best one that fits that bill?
