Head Cold Remedies

Ever since my son was born, he’s 3 now, it feels like any colds I get linger longer than before. For reference, I’m almost 34, I work out 4 days a week, in pretty good shape and eat a pretty clean and balanced diet, don’t smoke or drink.

Besides the usual: staying hydrated, rest, taking DayQuil and NyQuil.

Does anyone have any good tricks for getting over a cold faster or just let it run its course and suffer through?

My coworker mentioned taking zinc helps him but I’ve never given that a try. I will take emergenC but not sure it actually helps since the cold is already set in.

Zinc can help if you take it at onset, right when you get that tickle in the back of your throat. Other than that: hydration (3-4L daily), fresh air, change your furnace filter, SLEEP, manual lymph drainage (look it up on YouTube), and I personally like to make a mix of OJ, apple cider vinegar, and honey. My wife and I also started taking Freshcap mushroom supplements a couple years ago and I feel like they have helped our immune systems as well.

Some of my favorite cold remedies that i would classify as ‘natural’ would be Oregon grape (especially for anything sore throat related), diffusing essential oils(doesn’t matter really they all smell good), and then oregano oil. The oregano I feel does a better job of keeping you from getting sick than getting you over from being sick. Kids add another level of complexity when it comes to colds and everything always seems to run through the entire household multiple times over.

cowboy toddy or hot toddy - coffee or hot water, lemon juice, honey, splash of bourbon. If you're opposed to the bourbon disregard that ingredient. Will at least clear you up and cut your cough temporarily.

Kids just bring home super bugs that always seem to get you and get you for a long time. I'm in a similar situation as you OP.

Welcome to getting old.

I started popping vitamin C and multi vitamin gummies a few years ago. I have a little one in school and my wife and I both work in a hospital. It's certainly seemed to help keep some of the crud at bay in my case.

Just wait till your kid starts going to school and bringing home every germ known to man! Its a rough few years with new kids and getting sick but it levels out once you have gotten every cold and bug you can imagine.

I went through the same thing when my kids were little. I found that zinc and elderberry really seems to make a difference in kicking a cold quicker. Obviously lots of water and rest too. I have found some supplements on Amazon that are zinc, vitamin c, quercetin and elderberry that I take when anyone in the house starts sniffling. Maybe its a placebo effect but my colds don't seem to last more than 2 days after taking the supplements with plenty of water.

I actually about posted this exact thread recently. Used to a sinus/head cold would last around a week. Now it seems 3 weeks and its still hanging on. I haven't found anything that I take helps the side affects.

I work by myself most of the time. The rest of my family not so much. My wife is a HS teacher, oldest son in college, youngest son in high school, oldest daughter in 5th grade and youngest daughter in a daycare with 10 other kids.
