Have you hunted with ELD Match bullets

As my forum name implies, elk are my passion. Congrats on a GREAT WY elk. Have killed several in Wyoming, but none nearly as nice as that one. Well done!
Thank you. I got lucky. After hunting 3 weeks during archery and 3 weeks during rifle. I'm a cow killer now.

All I hunt with is the ELDM line of bullets. I've shot 2 deer and a wolf with the 140's. All had great expansion, one shot kills. 2 of the three didn't take a step.

I've been with a buddy for 2 kills on elk, one on a 5x5 with a 225 ELDM at 360 yards and a spike elk with the 140 at 550 yards. Both single shot dead right there kills.

I haven't ran ELDX because they don't shoot as well and I always have a harder time with getting them to group. Plus the ELDM's are tried and true and just perform incredibly well.

I've only killed 2 coyotes with the 147 so no serious test of bullet construction/performance. One was a head shot just under 100yds and the 2nd was behind the shoulder and 187yds.

But, I would not hesitate to shoot deer or other game with the 147 in my 6.5 PRC.

Out of my 6.5 PRC with 147 gr ELD-Ms, so far it has worked exceptionally well for everything up to oryx. I have a small number of kills under 300 yards (no shots under 100), the bulk have been in the 300-550 yard range, and a handful past 800 yards.

For those of you who have tried the 143 ELD X and the 147 ELD M, did both shoot the same load? With only 4 grains difference, I would think that is certain likely.

Depends on how much detail you put into your reloading. Most people I know shooting those two bullets end up with a close load but not exactly the same. I’m sure there are people using the same load because it shoots “good enough” for them.

To answer your original question yeah the eldm bullets and old Amax bullets work very well. Been using them since before it was cool on the internet 🤣

I've shot a few deer with the 7mm 162 eldm and have had great results. Shots were from 50 to 150 yards.

My current 6.5 cm and 6.5 SAUM shoot the 143 eld-x, 140 eldm, and 147 eldm very differently, and these are not picky barrels. They are not interchangeable in my experience.

You can tell when I have too much free time on my hands. I have already answered my question and think I will stay with the ELD X which has a thicker jacket.

Seen them both in action, I much prefer the eldm.

the 147 eldm was made for killing "stuff"

This is the most relevant datapoint. ELD-Ms were designed to kill things. Most law enforcement agencies can't use hunting bullets by policy. So Hornady can't label them hunting bullets if they want to sell them to LE agencies.

The ELD-M kills better than the X. That's not really disputable at this point. 7 of the 8 big game animals my family killed last year fell to 108 ELD-Ms. 80-450 yards. The lone outlier fell to a 143 ELD-X because my son's Tikka 6.5CM seems to shoot it better than either factory ELD-M loading and he has more confidence in it due to that.

both the X and M are killing machines. I’ve seen moose down to coyotes smoked with them and never even had to blood trail. DRT. A word of warning though, never shoot into something you intend to eat. They devastate soft tissue. Shoot behind the shoulder, not into it.

My Tikka 6.5C also shoots the 143 ELD-X better than any other ammo. Must be a Tikka thing.

I am a vote for the ELDM. I shot an elk at just over 1000 yards with a .284 180 grain and it worked perfectly. Also killed several deer with the 147 .264 and great results.
