Has anyone bought from this seller on eBay by chance? Just wondering if there’s a reason it’s nearly 15 dollars cheaper than everybody else. Lost my outdoor edge and considering replacing it with the havalon piranta. Have heard a lot of good things, and for 30 dollars and 12 extra blades I don’t see how this could be a bad deal.

Just buy it. Pay with PayPal and Your protected. BTW, Show lowest price 1st. There are some cheaper with the 12 blades.

I always felt that if I drug the havalon blades against a bone they immediately went dull. My wife got them, I'll see if I can find a brand name.
Yeah... I agree, maybe not immediately... but yeah... cutting around the knee joint... and the skimming along the vertebrae and ribs when doing the backstraps... for those two steps, I instead use the regular folder blade to save the Havalon's sharpness. Otherwise a blade change might be necessary.

Now I've got one of their Dual Blade, Bone Collector knives, and I really like it. And for the scalpel blade it has TWO lockouts on the blade... the liner lock and then this extra slide-forward button. And they were smart the way they did the liner lock.. it has a tiny nub in the middle of the liner-lock surface... so that when you're closing it... it first stops after initially being unlocked.. at that first nub position... which makes the blade stop from closing all the way back in... so you can doubly make sure your fingers are outta the way.

I just bought one of these. How many replacement blades should I bring on the hunt this year? I was thinking 3 or 4 but do they really dull quick?

I’ve hear of guys saying they only need 1 to quarter an elk, but have also heard if you pry at all the blade will snap. Would like to hear others input as well

I've gutted a few fish with mine and its like butter but I can see that blade snapping with little sideways pressure against bigger bones

I usually use 2 blades on an elk but I also use a fixed blade for popping the lower leg joints. Could get away with 1 but using two means when we flip the elk to do the second side of hide removal it’s very fast and clean with a new blade. I always pack 6.

I have had these blades snap really easy working on elk. I do use a fixed blade knife for any prying or bone popping... but in my experience I have found out that any little tweak on the blade they will snap in an instant. It always seems for me, that whenever I lose focus and do something stupid, 1 breaks. Although they will dull, my biggest gripe is them breaking.

I’ve never broken a havalon blade. It’s pretty obvious what they should be used for, and what they shouldn’t. Use the right tool for the right job. I use the piranta for skinning and more precise cutting, and my fixed blade for removing quarters, taking apart joints, and when not using gutless method gutting. Breaking a piranta blade and blaming the knife is like racing a pinto against a Bugatti and blaming your loss on the car.

I agree 100%. The guys I mentioned on prying with it I don’t think they were prying it intentionally, more of the working fast and forcing the issue. Otherwise have heard nothing but food things about it. I would much rather use my fixed blade for quartering anyhow much more familiar feeling.

I'd rather break 5 blades than carry two knives. Of course i have a sv90 Benchmade that could easily break down an entire elk without a touch-up but leave it home to save an ounce .

I’ve seen them break before when they are to dull and you force them to keep cutting. Also when trying to do to much slide load or pushing pulling to hard. They make two blades and the thicker blades are much better. They are great knives. Just change the blades out more often. They make a tool to help remove the blades. That’s the only down fall to them. The gerber version has a much better design for this. I also like the outdoors edge replaceable blade. Push a button and pull it out.

A couple swipes on a crock stick and they are hair popping sharp again.

Pro Tip:

2 new rapala 4" fillet knives can take apart a lot of deer & elk........cost less, and probably weigh less than two pirantas.

Don't do it! I switch from Havolin to Outdoor Edge years ago and will NEVER go back. I skin several pedestal and life-sized capes each year and always had problems with Havolins not only breaking blades but also slicing through skins. I've never broken an OE blade and they are by far the best disposable blade knife I use for skinning capes. I also skin several turkey capes each year (which are paper thin) and boy are they ever nice!

Havalon fan. I have had blades break and I had one handle that dropped blades. Havalon did a warranty replacement. I can go through a whitetail easy with one blade. Sometimes two deer. Gutting to skinning to to quartering to butcher, though Prefer a longer blade for butchering.

I carry 5-6 extra blades and prefer the 70a blades that have the blunt tip vs the 60a blades. I poke through the hide, organs and my fingers less with them.
