Havalon dropping blades

After answering a few questions, havalon has offered to send me a new knife if I send in the old one. Seems reasonable. Hopefully it works better.

My younger partners use em when we're breaking down and de-boning moose. It seems I'm always watching them reattach a blade. One couldn't find a half blade in a moose hind this year. Hopefully it only ruins someones grinder and not their mouth.

I ran a metal detector over the few bags of meat I kept!

They are OK for caping or small animals perhaps but there's some of those Scandinavian hunting knives can be bought at a very reasonable price and require minimal sharpening.

I've snapped several havalon blades while skinning and boning game...the last time I decided it was time to change to a different knife.

I switched over to Outdoor Edge and it's my go-to favorite knife. Relatively cheap and boy are they incredible for skinning and boning game. I've never had a blade break in several years of using and abusing them. I do a lot of cape skinning and rarely put unwanted holes in capes like I did with Havalons…..a lot better design of the blades! I cape turkeys which have paper-thin capes and never have a problem!

The other thing I like about OE knives are they are dirt cheap. I own several of them and it's no big deal if I happen to loose one.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. After some trial and error, with a spare Havalon I had, and another package of blades, I ended up figuring out that I got a bad run of blades. In the package, almost all but a couple blades were bad. It was like they had been machined to big, wasn’t easy to notice, but it was there. I have never had an issue since and have went though a pile of blades and still occasionally use that same knife today.

Havalon sent a new version of the same knife. Won’t know if it works better until next season but customer service was spot on.

I had this same issue this year. I’m switching knives. I’ll never deal with that mess again.

you might bust a blade, but they won't fall off.....

Thank you for sharing that with us...I just bought one for my son for Christmas. BTW, they offer a veterans discount.

He and I worked all nite with headlamps butchering the moose he shot last month...getting it all bagged, transported back to camp, and hung on the meat pole we built on day-1. He must have lost the blade on his knife at least four times...each time we had to stop and carefully search (with headlamps) until we found it...sometimes easy, sometimes harder.

Thank you!
