Trying to find something faster than my RCBS CM Lite to throw powder with. My RCBS Uniflow works fine for Staball 6.5 and Match, but I got close to +/- .5gr with H4350 (unfortunately I can't find my notes).

The 2 most popular powder throws for stick powders seem to be Harrells (@Carl Ross ) and the Lee Perfect Powder Measure. These powder measures are at complete opposite end of the quality spectrum. The Harrells is a piece of art and costs $240 and the Lee is extremely cheap feeling and cost $22. I didn't know the exact settings I needed to get 41 gr of H4350 (which is what I'd load) so I got both close then threw 30 charges.

I ran ~1lb of powder through each before throwing my charges. I used a pencil to mark +.4 to -.4gr increments on an RCBS 502 Beam Scale (like I said... super scientific).

Here's what I got. Other than going to a larger sample size would there be a better way to do this? I will probably load up 50 and hit the range in the next week or so. I have access to a 1,000+ yard range so I can see what happens at distance too. Through all of this I am probably still the limiting factor, but I shot some factory ammo a few weeks ago and can at least do some basic comparisons.

Harrells Culver 90 - Set at 70.05 - RCBS Scale set at 41gr. I marked which throws weren't smooth (red) and re-threw those as I found that significantly lowered the SD of my charge weights with ball powders. It didn't make much difference here but I ran the numbers on both as I'd just dump a rough throw back and rethrow it if I were actually loading.

that is very good.

one year i tried to keep track of powder thrown from my Harels. sitting at home with a stick powder with smaller kernels my numbers would be very similar. [ occasionally better] however loading behind the firing line the high and lows were greater. the number of times a heavy load followed a light load was significant as shots on the line would compact the kernels.

I’m going to try n140 also. Found my notes on that and it was an ES of 1.4 over 10 throws with the rcbs… 😬

I’ll update with groups over next few weeka or so to. 100y and further.

Nice test. That cheap Lee is great for stick powders but will dump fine ball powders out the side of the baffel. It's so cheap I have multiples for different loads so I don't have to bother adjusting them.

The old Lee hand primer is great too.

Loaded up 30 with H4350 from the Harrells and the Lee today, and 30 with Staball 6.5 from the Harrells.

Planning to shoot a 10 round group at 100 (highly doubt there's much difference), a 10 round string over the chrono, and a 10 round group at distance to see how things look.

My prediction is that I'm still the weakest link in the shooting system and that any of these would do fine.

Will update the original posts as I go.

Velocity data is limited as my battery died and I got some errors. I’ll add the rest I chronograph later.

Groups at 100.

Got back out today after the CBC.

Very windy so hard to get decent groups at distance, but another Rokslider was kind enough to loan me his garmin xero and I got great velocity info.

I’m concerned by the 100fps difference from last weekend with my magneto speed, to this weekend with the garmin, but will try to go one more time and shoot them side by side for a few rounds if I can later this week.

Either way, across 43 rds of H4350 loaded on the $22 Lee I had an ES of 58… that is comparable to I would get from 10 rounds on my CM lite (old data in next post).

Some data from last year. 3 different 10 round strings over the magnetospeed.
