Hanwag Sale and Boot Comparison

Hey y'all, Hanwag is having a sale on several of their GTX boots with some models up to 50% off. I've been looking for some true "mountaineering" style boots to add to my lineup and offer more stiffness for a heavy pack, rougher terrain, etc. I've doing a lot of research, so I figured I'd make a post to hear others' experiences and share my first impressions in case others are looking into any of these boots. I ordered three pairs to try on and will keep the one that wins.

I ordered:
Ancash II GTX
Tatra top wide GTX
Brenner pro wide GTX

I wear size 14 in Nikes and have a pretty wide foot (12cm), so I went with wides whenever possible. The Alaska GTX's were out of stock in 14 wides, which is why they didn't make the list, but the Ancash II looks comparable though a bit and apparently the StraightFit Extra last they use for this model is a bit wider in the forefoot. I will update with my impressions and which one I decide to keep.

In the meantime, it would be great to hear about others' experiences with any of these boots.

I tried a pair of the Hanwag Makri Combi's and they were too narrow for me. Heal slip right out of the box. I don't have a wide or narrow foot that i'm aware of. I wear Lowa Tibet's in a size 12D. Same size in the Hanwag Makra's were just too snug feeling for me so I returned them.

I ordered and returned the Tatra II Wide in an 11. The arch and heal cup felt great but they were not wide enough in the toe box. My toes were pinched together and I knew I couldn't wear them for hunts or hikes.

I am really looking for a full grain leather or nubuck boot with a wide toe box and standard heal. I have crispi wyoming II in a wide that I love, but they are not leather. I have crispi Nevada's in a wide that isn't wide enough, but I deal with it and have served their purpose, but they are past their peak so to speak.

I have an email into hanwag customer support to see if the last on the Alaska is any wider than the Tatra II. Would like to verify before ordering again if I am just going to have to ship them back. So if anyone has personal experience with alaska vs tatra II, I would love to know.

How much room are you leaving from the end of the toe to the end of the boot? If you would like us to double check how you are sizing your boot I'd be happy to help.

Generally about a half inch at the big toe. Variable depending on the curvature of the toe box.
