Hanging food

Does somebody know of any good videos for effectively hoisting food over a branch? I know pulling the cord directly over the branch is simple but friction easily takes over. Trying to work smarter not harder this year.

In the BWCA we toss a pulley over the tree, loop the food bag rope through the pulley then tie the pulley up however high you want the food pack.

We've never tried hoisting a full cooler or precooked meals up there....but I can tell you on my backcountry hunts it hasn't been a problem.

Even if it is heavy you have one guy lifting as high as he can...then you only need to get it another few feet.

Last year in Alaska, I brought a small pulley that I attached to a high branch and then ran a lightweight rope thru it.

Twice a day, for 8 days we lowered it and raised it

Seconded; once you use this rope you will never go back.

I also use a Granite Gear Toughsack for my cooking kit, but it's dual purpose in that I put a rock or some sort of weight in it and use it to throw over the branch. Makes it so easy once I went to this method and I hit the mark on the first try now that I went to this method.

Or cut a stick long enough to push it up while you pull the rope down. Takes little to no effort.

I think this cord paired with Clay's hoist system would be how you want to lift something heavy, this cord is a lot lighter in weight than paracord to haul up the mountain and doesn't stretch like paracord! My food bag just had several days worth of mountain House, energy bars and some jerky but didn't need the multipliers, it went up slick as you know what!

If you want to see the wrong way to hang your food, just ask on the internet how people hang their food. 99% of hangs are bad, and the only reason a bear hasn't snatched them up is because a bear hasn't happened to wander by. Use a bear can or an ursack or don't waste your time with it.

As far as cord goes, 1.75mm dyneema (zing it, lash it, lawson equipment, etc) is what you want.
