I'm hoping to gain some insight from you guys who regularly get the chance at extended range opportunities.

Are all handheld rangefinders objectively hard to obtain an extended range with versus any pair of RFB, or like RFB are different brands/models significantly better at getting a returned range outside of, say 4-500 yards?

I'm an east coaster, and no matter what RF I've ever tried, I can pretty much grab any range on-demand, as they are all within a few hundred yards, or bow range typically.

I took a Sig Kilo2500 for my Feb Aoudad hunt last year in place of my old Leupold FD4 due to the latter's max range capability of around 500 yards. Sig was obviously not the top model, but it would readily grab all ranges quicker/easier than the Leupold when testing at home. Both readily grab distances on the range. But once I got out west, even rested and as still as possible I could not reliably get a range over 500ish yards for the life of me. Sometime I could, but it was tough.

In December, I flew out to help my buddy on his son's Oryx hunt. He had a Vortex (Viper I believe), and it was the same issue. I tried stabilizing off the top of a tripod, trekking poles, the vehicle, etc. Once the range got outside of about 400 yards or had to be used over flat land with brush, we had multiple opportunities where both RF's simply would not give us a range. We ended up just making a 500ish-yard range call on his son's bull without them.

Tried another hunter's Geovid R's and they seemed significantly more reliable at ranging during my brief use.

Temps were nice and sunny, 40-70 degrees in all instances. Brand new energizer Lithium batteries, so no apparent issues with cold or low power.

Is this just something inherent to a handheld model that is just easier to accomplish inside of a heavier/more easily-stabilized bino? Or is something like the Revic BR4 just as reliable as the BR10, with the main advantage of the latter just having a combined unit with more FOV?

Thanks!
