Something reliable with a double stack, then alternate with two Buffalo bore and one hollow point.

The BB's, whether HardCast Lead, or LeHigh Xtreme Penetrators, are more meant to guarantee you get deep in there, regardless of the bullet is up against (bone, thick dense muscle) but not necessarily the largest wound cavity.

Whereas with garden-variety Hollow-points, not as deep, but significantly wider wound cavity.

So ya figure between the both of them, you should have your bases covered.

I do same thing with Lead-Free of [Xtreme Penetrators/Xtreme Defenders/Hollow-Point], especially when I go light with the lil .380acp in country w/o Bears, only MtnLion.

Used to carry a Ruger 357 revolver in griz country but always felt under gunned. Moved up to a Ruger 44 mag and feel like I'll at least have a fighting chance. Grizzlies are big, tough animals and you'll likely only get 1-2 shots if that. Hard cast ammo and carry a spare speed loader.

Tangent: Why does the 44 mag make your cut for grizzlies and not the .454 Casull or .500? I've had the .454 Casull on my radar for a while (almost bought one last week, already kicking myself for not doing so!), just trying to make sure I'm on the right track for a grizzly hand cannon.

I carry a 454 ruger in grizzly country and a 44 sw ultralight most of the time. Love my ruger but that thing is heavy. I would recommend the 44 ultralight if your on the fence

The many bear defense cases have shown a clear advantage to over penetrating Hard Cast bullets….in just about any caliber. Solid bullets are stoppers in these situations. They have been using solids in Africa for decades on dangerous game, its a proven winner.

I have shot all of the typical choices for bear defense. My top 2 picks would be the G-20 and the SW329PD…both with hardcast ammo. I primarily pack a stock G20 as I shoot the Glock platform a lot.

I don't have any bones about your choices....but I am interested in your quote about the "clear advantage" of hard cast bullets.

I've shot a pretty good pile of black bears. Even a 300 pound bear is not overly deep (thick) nor long.

EVERYONE seems to tout "Buffalo Bore" or hard cast "bear loads". I think this is really one person repeating what they read and hear.


I intentionally shot a bear with hard cast 385 grains from a 480 Ruger. I was completely underwhelmed. So was the bear.

You talking black bears ? Threat is very very very minimal. I have seen several while hunting but they take off like lightening as soon as they sense your presents. I use a 454 casull encore to hunt elk, would have no issue shooting a bear with it either. Would like to take a bear with my bow also.
